SO Readers – Nasha-Monique Douglas
2018 was an interesting year for me… there were some great moments and there were some not-so great moments. Whilst I would agree that this is just the natural course of life, I did become so much wiser. 2018 was my self-growth yea… I learned to pause, listen and lean into my own life a little more.
As I approach what I believe will be my most defining year, these are some of the tools that I will be taking on the journey. My top 10 books for 2019… it’s a mix of some oldies but goodies, a little self-understanding, fiction & some that made it to the big screen.
1. Becoming: by Michelle Obama – I got this last year but had to wait to read it in January… the start of my actual new year. Why Becoming? Michelle Obama is awesome and I love her, so she had to top the list. Plus, the truth she speaks is like hearing it out of the mouth of a sister-friend.
2. H3 Leadership by Brad Lomenick — “Be Humble…Stay Hungry…Always Hustle,” seems pretty straightforward, right? This is a practical guide for how to be a great leader for any stage of the leadership journey.
3. You are a Badassby Jen Sincero – Our greatest curse as women is that we can never own or celebrate our greatness. I have a major issue with taking compliments and celebrating my wins. This book has been on my list from last year because it’s a practical guide on how to own your awesomeness.
4. Girl Wash Your Faceby Rachel Hollis – This is a great reminder to drown out the negativity by embracing the things that make you uniquely special.
5. People over Profit: Break the System, Live with Purpose, Be More Successfulby Dale Partridge – The title got me with this nugget. Dale will take you through 7 core beliefs that create success by putting people first.
6. Wuthering Heightsby Emily Bronte – Now onto the classics… This is probably in my lifetime top 10 fav list. I love when a protagonist has a good comeback story.
7. How to Love a Jamaicanby Alexia Arthurs – This is a collection of stories about Jamaican immigrants and their family back in Jamaica from the raw truth-telling perspective of a Jamaican immigrant.
8. The Handmaid’s Taleby Margaret Atwood – This is my newest obsession. I just binge-watched two seasons of this intense novel that’s been turned a film. If the TV show can give me chills I can only imagine what the book will do. This dystopian fiction with the potential to be a reality will send chills down your spine and make you wake up real quickly about the world we currently live in.
9. The Four Agreementsby Don Miguel Ruiz – Another re-read but a necessary one, a timeless and practical reminder on how to live.
10. Win Within by John Gray – If you have not heard this man preach go check out his IG. He is the epitome of realness. Win Within is a practical and interactive guide that will help you identify and manage your inner struggle to overcome the worst versions of yourself.
Happy Reading!
