Too Legit to Quit!
Carb lovers, rejoice! There’s a new bakery in the Devon House courtyard: DHB Too. This little sister to Devon House Bakery (DHB) specialises in international treats, and coming soon is an array of pot pies, lasagne and macaroni and cheese dishes. Opened for just under a month, the cosy shop’s offerings are totally different from, but complement, those of the more established Devon House Bakery. But not to worry, DHB Too also sells the signature Devon House patties.
At present, customers can purchase an array of bars, individual cakes, pies and tarts, parfaits, trifles and cheesecake bars. The products are high-quality and the flavours are sure to please. On the day of Thursday Food’s visit, there were five cheesecake bar flavours — mango, strawberry, Oreo and Baileys white chocolate. The cheesecake bars are light, delicious and smooth — the indicia of the dessert being properly executed. It was a pleasure to find Nanaimo bars (a popular Canadian treat that’s a combination of chocolate, coconut and custard) among the offerings. These cheesecake-adjacent bars are moreish and there’s nothing quite like them.
The parfait and trifle options included red velvet, Baileys mudslide, black forest, mango-peach and tiramisu. Of course, the black forest and red velvet are extremely popular but don’t ignore the Baileys mudslide parfait. The spot-on flavour reveals that head pastry chef Sharyne Burke has a good grasp of mixology. This grown-up dessert is not overly boozy and is sure to delight.
Fans of pies, tarts and crumbles will love the selection at DHB Too. For crumbles, there are blueberry, apple and cherry; pies include chocolate silk, coconut cream and lemon meringue; and a pecan tart. Individual crème brûlées are, too, among the dessert offerings. If you’re jonesing for cake there are individual chocolate lava and blueberry lemon ones.
There are days you have a hankering for traditional Jamaican desserts and on others a taste of something different. DHB Too and Devon House Bakery, located right beside each other, ensure that you can always get both.
