Run Thatcher Run proves his bloodline
CHAMPION trainer Wayne DaCosta is looking towards next season’s three-year-old campaign with a lot more confidence and is now of the strong belief that his two-year-old chestnut colt Run Thatcher Run will do well in the Classic races and hopefully can be victorious in one of those treasured events.
This came after Run Thatcher Run (Omar Walker) won the 107th running of the $4 million Supreme Ventures Limited-sponsored Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes on Wednesday, Boxing Day, Decembner 26 at Caymanas Park.
The far-striding Run Thatcher Run held on by half-a-length from the fast-finishing Supreme Soul (Shane Ellis) and Earn Your Stripes (Dick Cardenas) in the 8-furlongs (1,600m) event. The final time was a decent looking 1:39.1. The splits recorded were 23.3 x 45.3 x 1:10.4. Run Thatcher Run is a half brother to both Without Exception and She’s A Maneater.
“Excellent performance considering he has never ventured longer that five and a half furlongs before and had raced only once in his career. You rarely see a performance like that and the 1:39.1 was quite good. If all goes well for this colt who is obviously from a blue blood thoroughbred line in Jamaica, the hope is for him to improve and do well in the future.
“For the Classic races, I think he will have a good chance. He is still inexperienced, he is still young, he has everything going for him for next year,” DaCosta told The Supreme Racing Guide.
When asked if he had envisaged such a good performance by Run Thatcher Run, DaCosta stated: “Coming into the race today (Boxing Day, December 26, 2018), Run Thatcher Run was doing quite well at exercise even stopping the clock at ….1:27.3 for seven furlongs. That indicated to me that he was coming along nicely and was ready to run despite being relatively green and never going beyond five and a half furlongs. I expected him to run well, but what I saw today showed me that he has class and with still quite a lot of improvement to come.”
It was a well-executed ride from Walker as the champion jockey held Run Thatcher Run behind Earn Your Stripes for most of the way before going through to challenge approaching the final bend of the race.
Run Thatcher Run drew alongside Earn Your Stripes in deep stretch before powering away at the end of the Futurity event for native-bred two-year-olds and still had enough in the tank to hold off the rasping challenge of Supreme Soul.
Earn Your Stripes lost the plot in the final furlong ending in third, while the highly thought of filly Corazon was never ever in the mix finished fourth.
