Pardon our progress!
Four major thoroughfares are currently being rehabilitated. This is, however, causing traffic delays throughout the Corporate Area.
These are: Marcus Garvey Drive; Mandela Highway (from Six Miles to Ferry); Constant Spring Road (from Manor Park to Eastwood Park Road intersection); and Hagley Park Road (from Maxfield Avenue to Three Miles).
The most ambitious, however, is the construction of two overhead bridges along Three Miles in the vicinity of Portia Simpson Miller Square.
Started on March 12, the work is expected to last 18 months.
The higher, longer overpass will be constructed along Hagley Park Road and Marcus Garvey Drive. It will be at a height of about 56 feet above the existing road level, while the second, on Spanish Town Road, will be seven metres high.
No significant upgrade has been done on the corridor for more than three decades, and over that period, there has been a considerable increase in the volume of traffic — currently measured to be in excess of 30,000 vehicles per day on some sections of the roadway.
Mandela Highway is the most traversed road in the island and sees 65,000 vehicles daily compared to Constant Spring, which sees somewhere between 46,000 and 48,000 vehicles daily.
