NFL 2018/19 – WeeK 17 – The hunt for playoof spots, Play locations well and truly on
THE final week of the NFL regular season is here and, while most of the postseason contestants have already secured their participation, where and when most of them play is still up for grabs. Additionally, there are a few still depending on the outcome of this weekend’s activities to determine their fate.
The New Orleans Saints (13-2) welcome the Carolina Panthers (6-9) into the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Sunday afternoon but don’t really have anything to play for, since they have already clinched home-field advantage through the NFC playoffs and the Panthers have been eliminated from contention. The Panthers will be playing for pride and the Saints may take their foot off the gas so this one is hard to predict. The New England Patriots, Houston Texans, Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs have clinched AFC playoff spots but three division titles and two first round byes remain undecided while the Los Angeles Chargers have booked their place in the NFC but a first-round bye is still available in that conference.
The Baltimore Ravens (9-6) are in control of their own fate this weekend when they welcome the Cleveland Browns (7-7-1) into M&T Bank Stadium: win and they are definitely in. If the Ravens lose, they will need other things to happen around the league but, more importantly, they leave the door open for the Pittsburgh Steelers (8-6-1) who are at home against the Cincinnati Bengals (6-9). The Steelers have the most to play for it’s hard to bet against them achieving a win.
The Minnesota Vikings (8-6-1) have the Chicago Bears (11-4) strolling into US Bank Stadium Sunday afternoon and also control their own destiny: win (or tie) and they’re in. If they lose and the Philadelphia Eagles (8-7), who visit the Washington Redskins (7-8) this weekend, win, a postseason path for the defending champions is set. The Bears may ease up this weekend considering they are already in, but the Vikings are going all out so Minnesota should take care of business making the result of Philadelphia’s game a non-issue. For the record, the Redskins have had a forgettable season and there is no indication that this will improve come Sunday afternoon.
The Dallas Cowboys (9-6) are locked in as the number 4 seed in the NFC but they visit the New York Giants (5-10) in an effort to enter the postseason on a high note. Both teams really have nothing to play for but bragging rights in the division but the Cowboys have owned the Giants in their last three meetings, including a 20-13 victory in mid-September. The Giants are closing out the season a lot better than they started but the Cowboys have high expectation and a win is going to set the stage for the Wild Card Round on January 5th.
The big ticket for Week 17 just happens to be the final game of the regular season. The Indianapolis Colts (9-6) and Tennessee Titans (9-6) clash heads at Nissan Stadium on Sunday Night Football. The winner advances to the playoffs, the loser gets to watch the postseason from the comfort of their couch. The Colts are also in if they tie and the Ravens or Steelers lose but it is a must-win if the Titans have ambitions beyond this weekend. Ironically, this is a matchup of the NFL’s 7th rank offence (Colts) against the 7th rank defence (Titans) and the winner takes it all. The Titans won both contests last season but were crushed 38-10 by the Colts in November and the result of this contest may come down to desire. On paper, Indianapolis should see themselves through this weekend but a closely contested game is expected.
The New Orleans Saints are firm JustBet favourites and are now offered at $3.40 to win the Super Bowl while the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs share the second favourite spot at $5.50.
