Eastern Kingston communities celebrate peace through sports
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Several eastern Kingston communities will come together over two days, tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, for the annual “Champion of Champions” football and netball competition at the Rollington Town Primary School playground, Carnavon Street.
The annual event aims at bringing together youth from rival communities, including McIntyre Lands (Dunkirk), “Bower Bank”, “Burgher Gully”, Nannyville, Jacques Road, Top Road, and other areas of eastern Kingston to compete in football (boys) and netball (girls).
However, invited teams from communities such as Portmore, Waterhouse, Harbour View and August Town also compete for the prizes, including $100,000 for the top football team, and $50,000 for the top netball team, as well as Most Valuable Players awards.
According to spokesman for the organisers, Sean ‘Chris’ Grant, the annual event is not aimed primarily at proving who are the best teams, but to bring the often volatile communities together in an atmosphere of “peace, love and unity”.
“We want to demonstrate a peaceful vibe, which we hope they will take back to their communities and sow the seeds of peace and unity within the entire east Kingston community,” he said
The activities commence at 9:00 am each day, and admission will be free. It is sponsored by a number of community businesses including: Grant’s Supermarket; K&M Meats; Almar Hardware; Lecky’s Enterprises; Reliable Gas; Phil’s Hardware; Gee Mac Liquors; Big Jack Lumber; Printing Innovations; M&R Tools; Karey’s Wholesale; and New Rollington Hardware.
