Dwight Nelson — gone into tomorrow
Dear Editor,
Kindly allow me to extend sympathy to all those who were close to Mr Dwight Nelson, a man who was particularly renowned for his role as a trade unionist here in Jamaica.
For me, he is gone into tomorrow, but his legacy lives on.
In his memory, I’ll say:
His long, long day is over.
The ritual of fighting pain will be, for him, no more.
The howling dogs paid last respects
The tolling bells rendered a final score.
The man of yesterday
Has gone into tomorrow.
Despite what mortal mouths may say
There is, for him, no sorrow.
May the gentle sun embrace those he left behind;
The shaken ones who weep;
Those who question what has happened to him who Seems to sleep.
Night has come;
Not for the man we’ll never see again.
Mysterious night is more with us within this realm.
But, despite the mist and darkness, we must find the strength to cope
Until freedom beckons us as well.
Think! Behind the gloom, there’s hope!
Who will be next?
Nobody knows.
Still, we are on this Earth to grow,
To learn, impart and play our roles until it’s our turn to go.
The Union Man has moved on
To what is deemed a ‘better place’.
We applaud his contributions
As his healthy soul traverses into that eternal space.
