TUCKER, St James — Waterhouse are sitting at the top of the points table in the Red Stripe Premier League after a comprehensive 3-0 beating of a badly slumping Montego Bay United at Wespow Park on Sunday.
Goals from Rafeik Thomas early in the game, and Kenroy Howell and Denardo Thomas late in the second half, drove Waterhouse to a solid win, their sixth in their last seven games which kept them unbeaten after 12 straight games.
Montego Bay United finished the game with 10 players when central defender John Barrett was sent off in the 71st minute after picking up his second yellow card in a 10-minute span.
Waterhouse are on 34 points, one more than defending champions Portmore United who were beaten 2-1 by Cavalier who are in third place on 31 points, all from 18 games.
Marcel Gayle, the Waterhouse coach, was in good spirits as his team closed the calendar year on a high.
“Yes, this was a good win… I thought we played well today. After we got the first goal, MoBay came back at us, but we soaked up the pressure and that was important,” he said.
“We dominated in the second half and from the second goal it was all Waterhouse from there; and we got a comprehensive win from a workmanlike performance and we are grateful,” Gayle added.
It was a different story for Montego Bay United (MBU) as they remain winless in five games since Dillon Thelwell took over as coach from Vassell Reynolds.
It was the second 0-3 loss for MBU in a week, after they were beaten by the same margin by Harbour View on Monday and slipped into the relegation zone – 11th place on 16 points.
Despite making four changes to the starting team that lost to Harbour View, it was the same result for the MBU team, as that created a number of scoring chances, but failed to score.
Odane Nish who held on to his starting position for the second straight game should have scored at least one of his two chances that came seconds apart early in the proceedings.
Waterhouse made full use of the reprieve and straight from the second Nish miss, they went down the field withThomas beating goalkeeper Aian Miller from the right flank and firing the ball into the far corner.
Howell made it 2-0 in the 87th minute when he slammed home the ball from close range on the right side and in time added Denardo Thomas ran all the way from close to the half line, down the left flank, deep into the MBU area before beating a hapless Miller from close range.
