Clarendon College (CC) yesterday claimed all-island supremacy when they clipped Kingston College (KC) 1-0 to secure their fourth hold on the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association Olivier Shield inside the National Stadium.

Substitute Andre Nicholson, who was introduced in the 65th minute, found the all-important strike in the 87th minute to ensure that Clarendon College brought the curtains down on the schoolboy football season in fine style.

Clarendon College, who won their eighth daCosta Cup crown a week earlier, broke a lengthy urban area hold on the Olivier Shield as they are the first rural area team to cop the title since 2006, when Glenmuir High shared the title with Bridgeport High.

This is also the first time a rural area team was winning the Olivier Shield outright since 2004 when Glenmuir defeated Excelsior High.

CC’s earlier triumphs came in 1977 and 1978, as well as 1998 when they shared with Dunoon Technical.

It was heartbreak for KC, who recently ended their 32-year wait to lift the Manning Cup for the 15th time and were hoping to add the all-island crown to their trophy haul this season.

Despite playing out an entertaining first half, neither team had anything to show as they evenly matched strides in giving as good as they got. Both teams showed good enterprise, though Kingston College were slightly more comfortable sitting behind the ball and hitting on the counter.

Even so, they still managed to create the best of chances with Trayvone Reid’s 18th-minute free kick coming back off the left upright.

They should have broken the deadlock on the half-hour mark when Shaquille Smith broke away and played a pass across goal for Oneeko Allen at the back post, but he skied his effort from close range. Allen again missed out in the 36th when he dragged a left-footed effort wide of the far post from a solo effort.

The nippy Lamar Walker with his usual pace and flair marshalled proceedings from the middle of the park for Clarendon College and wormed his way through KC’s defence a few times but failed to put the finishing touch on goal in the final third.

Nicque Daley, who was kept somewhat quiet under the watchful eyes of KC defenders Shahiem Edmondson and Tremaine Simpson for most of the half, eventually broke free but failed to beat the gloves of custodian Nathaniel Francis just before the break.

It was more of the same on the resumption as the game maintained a steady tempo with both teams looking threatening in their build-ups but again failing to make it count where it mattered most.

In the 70th minute Allen had another grand opportunity to put KC ahead, but like he did in the first half, the striker hit his effort high from close range.

KC would later pay for their profligacy in front of goal three minutes from time when Walker again orchestrated a tidy build-up before laying off to Nicholson, who composed himself, steadied the ball and fired a beauty into the top left-hand corner of the net past the flailing arms of Francis.
