Cedella Marley Designs, Island Trinketz partner to help Reggae Girlz ‘Strike Hard’ at World Cup
On the heels of Jamaica Reggae Girlz’s qualification for the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup, Cedella Marley, global ambassador for the Jamaica Women’s Football Programme, has designed a collection of jewellery to commemorate their historic achievement as the first Caribbean team to qualify for a women’s world cup tournament.
All profits from the Strike Hard Collection of bracelets and limited-edition silver charms will be donated to the Reggae Girlz.
The collection is a joint venture with the Jamaican jewellery company Island Trinketz. Island Trinketz is the fastest-growing contemporary sterling silver jeweller in the region. Founded in 2013, their line of products includes rings, earrings, necklaces, and their signature charm bracelet collection.
Previously, Cedella Marley (under her company Cedella Marley Designs) collaborated with athletic brand PUMA to design Jamaica’s uniforms for the 2012 Summer Olympics. She also designed the football kit for Jamaica in 2015. This is her first collaboration with a jewellery company.
Since becoming the women’s football ambassador in 2014, at the invitation of the late Captain Horace Burrell, then president of the Jamaica Football Federation, an office now held by President Michael Ricketts, the internationally renowned entertainer, author, designer, and CEO of Tuff Gong International has worked to raise awareness and funds in support of the programme. “I always knew that the players had the talent and the passion it took to make it to World Cup,” said Marley.
“What they needed were the necessary resources to train and prepare properly.”
The nutrition, training, health care, strength and conditioning it takes require a significant financial effort. Now that the team has qualified, a steady stream of funds is necessary for the round of training camps and International Friendlies it will take to get ready for France. As Cedella said after last month’s Concacaf Tournament that secured Jamaica’s berth, “We don’t compete to just qualify; we compete to win.”
Island Trinketz, under the direction of founder and Managing Director Raveen Dadlani, was one of the first Jamaican companies to reach out to Cedella about supporting the national team’s preparations for the Fifa World Cup set to take place in France next year. Like the ambassador, Island Trinketz is donating their share of the profits to the team as well.
“As a Jamaican (and a lover of football) I am extremely proud of what the Reggae Girlz have accomplished so far,” said Dadlani. “I believe it is important to not only celebrate them but to also make a contribution as a citizen.”
Cedella Marley agreed, stating, “The Jamaica Reggae Girlz are more than a football team, they are a national team representing Jamaica in the most important soccer competition in the world. They deserve our support as a nation.”
The Strike Hard Collection features a bracelet, three charms, and a limited-edition sterling silver bangle. The suggested retail price of the collection ranges from US$40 to US$138 and is set to arrive in stores early next month, but football fans and jewellery collectors don’t have to wait to secure their piece of Jamaican football “her”story. Pre-orders of the collection have started at the Island Trinketz online store here.
