CATHERINE HALL, St James — Favourites Clarendon College and Cornwall College will meet in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football final after contrasting wins over Dinthill Technical and Frome Technical, respectively, in yesterday’s semi-finals at Montego Bay Sports Complex.
It will be a repeat of the 1991 final that Clarendon College won 1-0 at Jarrett Park, but Cornwall College have won the last two meetings between the teams.
Clarendon College shook off the rust of an almost three-week break to hammer Dinthill Technical 4-0 as Nicque Daley scored a double with Ricardo McIntosh and Javell Ellis getting the other goals as they ran their record in the daCosta Cup to 14 wins in a row.
Cornwall College extended their unbeaten run to 19 games after beating Frome Technical 4-2 on penalty kicks after they played out a 0-0 draw in regulation time.
It was yet another semi-final let-down for Dinthill Technical, who were losing in back-to-back daCosta Cup semi-finals to Clarendon College, who beat them 5-2 at the same stage and same venue last year.
Frome Technical held Cornwall College goal-less for the first time this season but came up just short in the shoot-out.
Clarendon College rebounded from a sluggish first half to dominate Dinthill Technical with a masterful second half as Daley led the demolition with two well-taken goals.
Dinthill Technical finished the game with 10 players as Karin Bryan was sent off in the 74th minute after he dragged down Lamar Walker just on the edge of the 18-yard box when he had a clear run at goal.
Clarendon College’s Head Coach Lenworth Hyde told the Jamaica Observer after the game they had to “soak up a lot of pressure in the first half”, but said his instruction at half-time was simple: “Enjoy the game.”
Hyde said after they “weathered the storm” their passing game took away the legs from the Dinthill players.
Xavier Gilbert, Dinthill Technical’s coach, admitted they had the better of the chances in the first half but did not take their chances and they paid for it.
“We took too long to adjust and were too slow in transition,” he said. “After the first two goals, we gave up, but we did well all season.”
Dinthill Technical started better in the first game as they pushed Clarendon College back in their own half, but Martin Beech and Kevin Cheese missed good scoring chances.
Clarendon College came out of the gates better in the second half and forced a double save from the Dinthill Technical’s goalkeeper John Michael Edwards in the 48th minute.
Daley gave his team the lead in the 50th minute when he got a pass from McIntosh from the left wing and beat two defenders before curling the ball low past Edwards into the far left corner of the goal.
McIntosh doubled the advantage in the 62nd minute when he powered home a rebound after the Dinthill Technical defence failed to clear a corner.
The red card to Bryan knocked the winds out of Dinthill Technical’s sails and Daley in the 78th minute and Ellis in the 85th scored from close range to finish the rout.
In the second game, which witnessed a red card to Frome Technical’s Clifton Suban in the 87th minute, Cornwall College connected on their four penalties through Shavon McDonald, Calvin Gardner, Benyu Ricketts, and Matthew Thorpe, while Frome replied through Giovonni Mitto and Jevoy Harvey.
Goalkeeper Peter Sinclair saved one spot kick and watched another blaze well wide of his goal frame as Cornwall College sealed victory and a place in the final.
