‘Axeman’ warms to idea of big fight in MoBay heartland
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Nicholas Walters, the former WBA flyweight champion, says he would relish fighting in Montego Bay where he was born and raised, but says it is not only up to him to make the decision.
Walters was part of the launch of the Gloves Over Guns fight card set to be held at Montego Bay Cricket Club this weekend and said he was expecting to return to the ring later this year after a layoff.
“Fighting in the western citywould be up to a number of people, but it would be great for me to fight in Montego Bay after creating history by winning a world title on home soil in Kingston… it would be great to fight here, given I was born and raised here,” he said.
“A part of it (decision) would be up to me yes, but we would have to have a card, and a suitable card, to make it worthwhile. But it is possible with the Jamaica Boxing Board and others such as the business community, who would have to come on board and give the people of Montego Bay a chance to see the Axeman in action.
“That would be a real good idea… a comeback fight here in Montego Bay. It would be nice, thinking about it now. Yes I would like that,” said Walters.
The 32-year-old fighter, who is based in Panama, and who has not fought since the first loss of his career to Vasyl Lomachenko of Ukraine two years ago in Las Vegas, told the Jamaica Observer he was eyeing the WBA Super featherweight world title held by American Gervonta Davis.
“I took some time off since the loss to Lomachenko. But I am back in training now and have put on some weight and doing a lot of training-boxing, weight training and conditioning as well,” said the man with a ring record of 27 wins and one loss.
The former champion at 126lbs, weighed up his future options.
“My aim is to get back to 130lbs, I might do two fights at 135lbs (lightweight) and go back down to 130 and try to be the champion there,” Walters noted.
