Camperdown move into Champions Cup quarter-finals
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Camperdown High advanced to the quarter-finals of the ISSA Champions Cup after edging a wasteful Frome Technical High 1-0 in their first-round game at the Montego Bay Sports Complex yesterday.
An opportunistic goal from Ziddon Braithwaite early in the second half decided the the game after Frome had two clear chances to take the lead right after the start of the second half and also wasted a penalty late in the game.
Aaron Lawrence, coach of the Frome Technical team, said while he was disappointed with the results, he felt his team performed well.
“It is hard to take the loss, but we did well… we got the chances to win the game and they got one chance and took it, so we can’t complain too much,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Frome will next turn to the semi-finals of the daCosta Cup, and Lawrence said yesterday’s game will help them prepare for a shot at the December 1 daCosta Cup decider.
Frome Technical dominated the possession, and with Giovauni Mittoo attracting close attention, it was left to Keith Blake, Granville Rickets and Alwayne Hill to take the fight to the Camperdown team.
Frome Technical got their first chance in the 12th minute when a slick combination between Mittoo and Blake saw the latter dart into the 18-yard box, but his shot was just wide of the right post.
Frome Technical got two good chances early in the second half, but Mittoo and Ricketts both missed from close range.
A mistake by the Frome goalkeeper Tyrae Cummings led to the goal as he fumbled a cross from the left wing and Braithwaite was on it in a flash to kick it past the sprawled custodian into the goal.
The goal lifted the Camperdown team and they pinned the Frome Technical team back in their own defence for long periods, but failed to add to the scoreline.
Frome thought they had a lifeline in the 80th minute when they were awarded a penalty after a Camperdown defender handled the ball in his own area, but goalkeeper Daniel Prince Smith came up big, guessing correctly by diving to his left to save the shot taken by Mittoo.
At press time, Cornwall College and Wolmer’s Boys’ were locked in battle in the other match of the double-header.
