Clarke, Barclay top Wata Junior Tennis Championships
KEYONDRE Clarke and Re-Anna Barclay came out on top in the Boys’ and Girls’ 16 and under singles finals, respectively, at the 2018 WATA Open Junior Tennis Championships held at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston last Sunday.
Clarke, who was seeded at number one in the Boys’ 16 and under singles category, defeated second-seed Cole McNair 6-4, 2-6 and 10-1 in the super tie-breaker set. It was a good second-set win for McNair, but Clarke was too strong for his opponent in the tie-breaker set where he won convincingly.
Meanwhile, in the semi-finals, Clarke defeated third-seeded Joshua Graveney 6-0, 6-2, while McNair beat unseeded Nathan Cooper 6-3, 7-6 (7-4 tie-breaker). Cooper had knocked out fourth-seed Richard Barnett 0-6, 6-0, 10-1 (super tie-breaker set) in the second round.
Barclay defeated Peta-Gaye Graham 8-2 to register her fourth win from as many matches to capture the Girls’ 14 and under singles title. Prior to beating Graham in the final, Barclay had defeated Ari Dougal 8-1, Kyle Finlason 8-0 and Imani Christian 8-6.
Graham had won three-straight matches before losing in the final to Barclay, beating Dougal 8-2, Finalson 8-1, and Christian 8-5 in a tough encounter before winning.
Moesha Fox the top seed in the Girls’ 18 and under singles Open encountered a keenly contested battle in the final against Aanchal Khemlani before winning the title 8-6. Fox had beaten Layna Johnson 8-0, Mia Wong 8-2 and Shanelle Dale 8-0.
Khemlani’s three wins before losing to Fox in the final were against Johnson 8-1, a fighting 8-6 against Wong, and 8-0 to Dale.
Jason Duval captured the Boys’ 14 and under singles title with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Matthew James in the final. In the semi-finals, Duval beat third-seed Joel Villoria, while James defeated unseeded Arjan Trehan 7-5, 6-3.
The Boys’ 14 and under consolation singles was won by Iyam Stewart Gaynor, who beat Zack Umrao 6-3.
Courtney Chin won the Girls 14 and under singles title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kalila Morris. In the semi-finals, Chin beat Bryanne Brown 8-1, while Morris beat Isabelle Champagne 8-1. Brown had knocked out top-seed Eva Pinchas 8-1 in the second round.
