Late penalty lifts Frome into D’Cup semis
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Frome Technical High School scored a dramatic late penalty to edge a gallant Mile Gully on the second tie-breaker — more goals — to win Group One of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition and qualified for the semi-finals.
Giant killers Mile Gully High, a best third-placed qualifier from the first round who knocked out defending champions Rusea’s High in the second round, saw their luck run out in the dying minutes of the game played at Manchester High, as despite winning their quarter-final game 2-1, they failed to make a historic top-four finish.
Both teams ended the quarter-finals locked on six points in Group One and a goal difference of two goals, but Frome Technical scored five goals in their three games to Mile Gully’s four and will join Cornwall College, Clarendon College and Dinthill Technical in the November 15 semi-finals.
Frome Technical will face Group Four winners Cornwall College in one semi-final while Clarendon College and Dinthill Technical will meet in the other semi-final for the second year running.
Clarendon College, Dinthill and Cornwall College won all three games in the quarter-final round.
Mile Gully will enter tonight’s draw for the first round of the ISSA Champions Cup along with the other quarter-final runners-up — Manchester High, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Garvey Maceo High.
Yesterday, Mile Gully, who had beaten Maggotty High on Friday, needed to beat Frome Technical by two goals to win the group, and led 2-0 late with goals from Marlon Miller and appeared well on their way.
A penalty kick was awarded to Frome Technical after it was ruled that a Mile Gully defender had handled the ball in his own box and Giovauni Mittoo stepped up and buried the kick to get his team back into the semi-finals.
Clarendon College came from a goal down, the first goal they had conceded in seven games since October 2, to beat St James High 3-1 to extend their perfect win record to 13-straight.
Duran Panton, Antonio Reid and Nicque Daley scored in the second half to help Clarendon College ease through to the semi-finals for the third-straight year.
Dinthill Technical edged Lennon High 2-1 to win Group Three with goals from Martin Beech and Oneil Smart as they also advanced to the semi-finals for the third season.
At Jarrett Park, a first-half goal from Solano Birch was enough for Cornwall College to edge out of contention Glenmuir High 1-0 to win Group Four.
Manchester High whipped Old Harbour High 4-0 to take second place in Group Two; STETHS were 2-1 winners over Petersfield High for the runner-up spot in Group Three, while Garvey Maceo were 2-0 winners over Charlemont High for the runner-up spot in Group Four.
