Dinthill, Frome inch closer to semi-finals
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Former champions Dinthill Technical and Frome Technical made giant steps towards qualifying for the semi-finals of the ISSA/ Wata daCosta Cup, after scoring back-to-back wins in quarter-final-round action yesterday.
Dinthill Technical edged previous former champions St Elizabeth Technical 2-1 in the first game of a double-header at Juici Field, while Frome Technical were 3-1 winners over Port Antonio High in the second game, as both losers were being beaten for the first time this season.
In other games yesterday, Charlemont High rebounded from their loss to Cornwall College on Tuesday to beat Glenmuir High 2-1 at Prison Oval, knocking the fomer champions out of daCosta Cup or ISSA Champions Cup contention, while St James High and Old Harbour played to a 2-2 scoreline.
Dinthill Technical will be without Tevin Cheese, who scored the winner yesterday, after he was ejected from the field in the 54th minute — forcing his team to play one man short for 36 minutes — and will thus sit out Tuesday’s game against Lennon High.
The win, however, took them to six points, at the top of Group Three with six points and they are a point away from making it to back-to-back semi-final appearances.
All three goals came in the first 32 minutes of play as Carlington Facey gave Dinthill Technical the lead in the 23rd minute, but Jahlani Green tied it up for STETHS in the 31st only to see Cheese score what turned out to be the winner a minute later.
Frome Technical won for the third-straight outing with goals from Giovauni Mittoo, Granville Ricketts and Javoy Smith, as they ended Port Antonio High’s unbeaten run.
Frome Technical had lost the first leg of the second-round home-and-away tie to Christiana High, but won the return leg at Frome before edging Maggotty High at the same venue in the first game of the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
At Prison Oval, Clive Wedderburn and Marlon Martin scored for Charlemont High as they edged Glenmuir High 2-1 in their Group Four game.
At Manchester High, Tiyane McIntosh scored both goals for St James High as they picked up their first point of the round, drawing 2-2 with Old Harbour High, with both teams coming off big losses on Tuesday.
St James had lost 0-4 to Manchester High, while Old Harbour were spanked 5-0 by Clarendon College.
There was a mix-up in the venues for the Petersfield vs Lennon High game that was belatedly set for Manchester High, and efforts were being made to play it late at St Elizabeth Technical Complex last night.
