Clarendon blow away Manchester 4-0
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Clarendon College brushed aside Manchester High 4-0 to seize control of Group Two in the quarter-final round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup.
Midfield maestro Lamar Walker scored in the 42nd minute to give Clarendon a slight advantage at half-time.
Kenroy Stoddart (47th minute), Nicque Daley (85th), and substitute Andre Nicholson, in the first minute of stoppage time, added three more goals in cool evening conditions at a packed St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex.
The win ensured Clarendon, last season’s losing finalists, remain perfect in their quest for a semi-final spot after they previously defeated Old Harbour High 5-0.
In the opening match at the venue, Cornwall College came from behind twice to clip Garvey Maceo High 3-2.
Ronaldo Wright (eighth minute) and Tyrique Henry, in the first minute of first-half stoppage time, got the goals for Garvey Maceo.
Cornwall, the 2016 daCosta Cup champions, clawed their way back through Solano Birch (10th minute) and Shavon McDonald (47th), before Matthew Thorpe struck the last-gasp winner in the second minute of stoppage time, mere seconds shy of the final whistle.
It was Cornwall’s second win from as many outings to take them to six points in Group Four.
In yesterday’s feature encounter, billed as a “clash of contrasting styles”, Clarendon College turned out relatively comfortable winners.
The Lenworth Hyde-coached Clarendon College, a possession football-oriented unit, is set up to use predominantly short passes to shred their opponents.
Manchester High, the high-tempo, direct-attacking marauders guided by Andrew Edwards, also have the potential to be deadly, but they tend to thrust forward directly with minimal frill.
The action yesterday was true to the script from the first whistle, however, the outcome always rested on efficiency in front of goal.
In the end, Clarendon were far superior in that department and were good for their win.
While keeping the ball for most of the early exchanges, Clarendon created a few half openings, but were unable to find the Manchester net.
However, the Manchester team, trying to play compact and secure when without the ball, proved resilient until they appeared to wilt late in the game.
The issue was compounded when they had exhausted their substitutions and were left to play the final few minutes with only 10 players after goalkeeper Xavian Johnson was forced off due to injury.
Manchester also could have got on the scoresheet if not for faulty finishing in both halves.
Walker ensured his team had the 1-0 lead at the break when he ran onto a through pass and was composure personified to deftly chip the Manchester goalkeeper from a tight angle.
The second half played out like the first and Stoddart doubled his team’s advantage when his long-range shot was too good for the Manchester goalkeeper.
Clarendon missed several glaring chances thereafter, but put the icing on the cake when Daley and Nicholson both netted near the end.
