Port Antonio clip wings of Mile Gully
PORT ANTONIO, Portland – Port Antonio High clipped high-riding Mile Gully High 1-0 in their quarter-final match of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup at Carder Park here on Tuesday.
The lone goal was scored by Andrew Layne in the eighth minute.
In the keenly contested game, Port Antonio took the lead when Mile Gully failed to clear the ball properly, which landed nicely for Layne. The Port Antonio striker, after bringing the ball under control, dribbled a few feet forward before unleashing the ball that whizzed through the air beating Mile Gully custodian Nashan Smith.
Undaunted by the early setback, Mile Gully searched for the equalising goal through Javel Coley, Marlon Millerand Dontae Larmond, but failed to get by Port Antonio defender Shavaughn McAnuff and custodian Giovanne Fuller.
Not satisfied with the solitary goal, the home team kept up the action at the other through Layne, Tajay Puran, Benjamin Byfield and Oshavony Jackson.
The second half mirrored the first as both teams traded attacks, but again both defences held up.
But the afternoon got worse for Mile Gully when they were reduced to 10 players in the 66th minute after Sanjay Campbell was given his marching orders following a vicious tackle on Port Antonio’s Oshavony Jackson.
Port Antonio coach Marlon Hylton, while celebrating the win, rued the numerous missed chances by his team.
“It was a good game for us… we got an early goal, but we failed to utilise numerous other opportunities… we (clearly) need to do the adjustments (as we go forward),” he said.
Losing coach Deron Watson, said: “It was a tough game for us as we have not yet recovered from Rusea’s game, but commendations to the Port Antonio team.”
