Garvey Maceo blank Glenmuir in d’Cup ‘quarters’
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Garvey Maceo kicked off their quarter-final round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup yesterday after beating Glenmuir High 2-0 in their Group Four game played at Juici Field Complex.
Second-half goals from Anjay Gayle and Tyreke Henry carried Garvey Maceo to their 13th-straight win which took them joint leaders with Cornwall College, both on three points and setting up a big clash at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex on Saturday.
It was the third win for Garvey Maceo over Glenmuir High this season after twice beating them in the first round by similar 1-0 margins, when they met in Zone M.
Gayle scored his third goal since the start of the second round and 12th overall when he gave Garvey Maceo the lead in the 55th minute before Henry added a second in the 61st minute.
Garvey Maceo had won Zone M in the first round before getting past Seaforth High 3-1 on aggregate in the second round, while Glenmuir High, who were the runners-up, advanced on away goals rule ahead of St Mary Technical after drawing their first game 1-1 at Highgate then drawing the second game at Juici Field 0-0.
The higher-ranked teams are leading after the first games in the quarter-finals that started on Tuesday.
Former champions Frome Technical and Port Antonio High are tied at the top of Group 1 after scoring 1-0 wins over Maggotty High and Mile Gully High, respectively.
Clarendon College lead Group Two on goal-difference over Manchester High after both scored big wins on Tuesday; Clarendon College beat Old Harbour 5-0, while Manchester High blanked St James High 4-0.
St Elizabeth Technical High and Dinthill Technical are the leaders in Group Three after wins over Lennon High and Petersfield, respectively.
Cornwall College lead Group Four only on goals scored over Garvey Maceo High after beating Charlemont High 3-1 on Tuesday.
