STETHS, Cornwall, Clarendon score big wins
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Former champions Clarendon College, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Cornwall College scored emphatic wins yesterday as the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition kicked off with seven games.
Clarendon College beat Old Harbour High 5-0 in their Group Two game after STETHS were 2-0 winners over Lennon High in their Group Three game, both played at Juici Field, while Cornwall College beat Charlemont High 3-1 in their big Group Four game played at the Bramwell Clarke Complex in Ewarton.
There were also wins for Dinthill Technical in Group Three, Frome Technical and Port Antonio High both in Group One, while Manchester High beat St James High 4-0 in Group Two at Jarrett Park.
There is one game set for today, where Garvey Maceo High will put their 12-game winning streak on the line when they face a familiar opponent, Glenmuir High, who they beat twice in the first round, in Zone M.
Garvey Maceo had won both first-round games by 1-0 margins and this result will give both teams the confidence to take all three points today.
After bullying the zone, conceding just one goal while scoring 43, Garvey Maceo will be confident they have the measure of the former champions.
However, the slim margin of their losses could lead Glenmuir High to think they can turn things around today and put themselves in a position to go after a semi-final spot.
Yesterday, as the action got under way, Clarendon College, last year’s beaten finalists, extended their perfect win streak to 11 games with a 5-0 thumping of Old Harbour High.
Nique Daley continued his good run with a double for Clarendon College, Duran Panton also got a brace, including a penalty kick, while Lamar Walker got the other.
At Bramwell Clarke, Aiden Jokombo got his third-straight double as Cornwall College scored three goals in the first half for the second-straight game, while Shavon McDonald broke his goal drought with a brilliant free kick.
It was Cornwall College’s 13th-straight game without a loss this year as they assumed the lead in Group Four before today’s game.
In the first game, at Juici Park, Ronaldo Webster got two goals late in the second half as STETHS beat Lennon High 2-0.
Webster scored in the 76th and 91st minutes as STETHS also extended their unbeaten run to 13 games.
Martin Beech’s second half goal gave Dinthill Technical a 1-0 win over Petersfield High at Frome as they joined STETHS on three points at the top of Group Three.
Andrew Layne scored in the eighth minute as Port Antonio High brought giant killers Mile Gully back to earth with a 1-0 win at Carder Park, and also stayed unbeaten after 13 games as well.
Frome Technical are tied with Port Antonio High at the top of Group One after edging Maggotty High 1-0 at Frome with a second-half goal from Granville Ricketts.
At Jarrett Park, Marlando Maxwell scored a second-half double as Manchester High shocked St James High 4-0.
Dane Golding gave Manchester High the lead after 24 minutes as the visitors led 1-0 at half-time before scoring three goals in a 12-minute span in the second half to knock the fight out of the St James High team who were suffering the largest loss of the season.
Maxwell made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute when he curled a free kick past goalkeeper Manuero Gordon into the top right hand corner of the goal.
Manchester High had by this time taken over the game and capitalised on St James High’s disorganisation and Maxwell got his second goal — his team’s third — three minutes later when he smashed the ball past Gordon from inside the penalty area.
Larry Maitland scored from almost the same spot that Maxwell got his second, when he hammered home a shot in the 65th minute.
