Clarendon Park, Clarendon — Last season they were beaten finalists in the daCosta Cup and had to be content with the Ben Francis Cup.

However, the consensus of opinion at Juici Park on Friday was that Clarendon College will have every right to be very disappointed should they not win the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup this season.

This, after they waltzed past Green Island High 5-0 for an aggregate 10-0 margin over the two-way tie to reach the quarter final stage of the competition.

In the first leg of a double header, Glenmuir High were held to a 0-0 draw by St Mary Technical High but advanced on the newly adopted away goal rule, having drawn the first game of the tie 1-1 in St Mary.

In the second-leg feature game, a large crowd braved uncertain weather, to watch as stylish Clarendon College completely outclassed Green Island High. The powerfully built striker Nique Daley scored twice, in the 55th and 73rd minute, Lamar Walker in the 46th, Roderick Granville in the 53rd and Earl Simpson in the 64th.

Green Island played the last few minutes with 10 men after Giovanni Watson was ejected in the 86th minute on a second yellow card.

Though possessing the ball for minutes at a time, Clarendon College were frustrated for much of the first half as Green Island High kept their composure in defence and stayed close to their more skilful opponents. Superb work by Green Island’s goalkeeper Dave Fearon was also a major factor.

Yet, as the game progressed, Green Island High were increasingly pulled apart by Clarendon College’s precision passing, deft dribbles and good off-the-ball movement.

With the referee preparing to blow the half-time whistle, the gifted Walker wove his way through the heart of the defence and his right-foot blast unerringly found the bottom right-hand corner of Fearon’s goal to give Clarendon College the lead..

Eight minutes into the second half, Walker’s wonderfully weighted pass found Granville on the run through the Green Island defence. He eluded the ‘keeper to casually slot home.

Two minutes later Daley powered through the Green island defence to score the third goal. The fourth followed nine minutes after, when Simpson headed home a right-sided corner.

Daley found his second and the game’s final goal with 73 minutes gone, holding off defenders before finding the goalkeeper’s left-hand corner with his left-foot shot.

Lenworth Hyde, coach of Clarendon College was very pleased. “It’s the first time all season that I have seen the team play with such focus from minute one to the end,” he said. “They passed and circulated the ball well,” he added.

Green Island High’s Coach Carl Palmer felt his team did well in the first half especially in the first 15 minutes but lost concentration as the game progressed.
