LUCEA, Hanover — Rusea’s High’s reign as ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup champions ended yesterday after they were knocked out in the second round by Mile Gully High on away goals after their tie ended in a 4-4 aggregate.

Despite winning 3-2 yesterday with two goals from Javoy Diaz in the first half, Rusea’s had lost the first game 1-2 at Mile Gully as the Baron Watson-coached team advanced by virtue of scoring two away goals.

On Friday Glenmuir High became the first school team in Jamaica’s history to advance on the away goal rule, but three more schools including Petersfield High and Maggotty High, joined them yesterday.

After Glenmuir High and Clarendon College advanced on Friday, they were joined in the quarter-finals by Lennon High, Garvey Maceo High, Petersfield High, Frome Technical, Charlemont High, Dinthill Technical, Manchester High, Cornwall College, Maggotty High, Port Antonio High, Old Harbour High, St James High, Mile Gully, and St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS).

Mile Gully, the 32nd and lowest-seeded team in the second round and who advanced as a best third-placed team, created the historic upset at the Colin Miller Complex in Lucea after they came from 0-3 down to score twice in the second half to knock out the top-ranked team.

Needing to win, Rusea’s High were flying after Diaz scored in the 34th and 39th minutes, and it looked to be all over when Lenroy Anderson added a third in the 48th minute.

Watson told the Jamaica Observer that they were not ready to roll over and kept pushing and were rewarded with goals from Dontae Lawman in the 64th minute and Javel Coley with his 11th of the season in the 82nd minute to shift the game in their favour.

The veteran Watson said they were not surprised that they had beaten Rusea’s a few days earlier. “On Wednesday we noticed they were big but not very agile, and we have small, quick and skilful players, so we knew that once we kept the ball on the ground and ran at them we would get success.”

He said it was belief in themselves that led to the upset. “We told ourselves we were ranked 32nd and Rusea’s was number one so we had nothing to lose. so we said let’s go out and create history, no one expected us to do this but we worked hard in training and got what we worked for.”

Petersfield High were beaten at home 0-2 by B B Coke as the teams ended both legs locked at 4-4, but the Westmorland schools advanced on away goals.

Cedric Titus were knocked out at the same stage for the second year as they were held 1-1 by Maggotty High who advanced on the away goal rule as well.

And two teams came back from first-leg losses to win and advance yesterday, Frome Technical and Charlemont High.

Frome trailed Christiana High 1-2 after the first leg but Alwin Hill, who had scored on Wednesday, got both goals as they won 2-0 yesterday for a 3-2 aggregate.

Charlemont High also lost 1-2 to Brown’s Town in the first game, but won 3-0 yesterday to advance 4-2.

St James High also advanced after two closely fought games against Paul Bogle High, both ending in 1-1 scorelines, but the former champions prevailed 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Dinthill Technical were the biggest winners of the round with an 11-0 aggregate result over Herbert Morrison Technical, with a 5-0 win at home yesterday.

Marlando Maxwell scored a double for Manchester High as they beat Spalding High 3-1 for 6-1 overall; Aiden Jokomba scored twice as Cornwall College beat Titchfield High 3-0 for 6-1 overall, while Ronaldo Webster scored twice for STETHS in their 4-1 win over Vere Technical for a 6-1 aggregate result.

Garvey Maceo High ran their perfect win record to 12 games after a 2-1 win over Seaforth High for 3-1 all told.

Port Antonio High beat Oracabessa 3-0 for a 5-0 aggregate win, while Old Harbour drew 0-0 with St Mary High to advance with 2-0 on aggregate.
