LUCEA, Hanover — Defending champions Rusea’s High will need another ‘great escape’ if they are to advance to the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition, as they go into today’s return leg against Mile Gully trailing by a goal, after losing the first leg 1-2 on Wednesday.

Rusea’s High are among the 14 schools that are seeking to advance today, joining former champions Clarendon College and Glenmuir High who booked their quarter-final spots yesterday.

It was a historic performance for Glenmuir High as they became the first school in Jamaica to advance on the away goals rule, after playing out a 0-0 draw against St Mary Technical High at Juici Park following a 1-1 draw in the first leg on Wednesday.

Clarendon College beat Green Island High 5-0 for the second time in three days for a 10-0 aggregate, improving their winning run to 10 games.

Nique Daley scored yet another brace for Clarendon College, while Lamar Walker, Earle Simpson and Roderick Granville also scored for Clarendon College.

Green Island finished the game with 10 players after Geovanni Watson was sent off in the 86th minute.

It is the second year running that Ruseas High has lost the first leg of the second-round game, after being edged 1-0 by Browns Town last year, and were forced to come back playing away last year.

Today they will have home advantage, but will also be without Chen Moodie who was sent off in the second half on Wednesday.

Two more favoured teams — Frome Technical and Charlemont High — will also need to come from behind today after losing by 1-2 scorelines to Christiana High and Browns Town, respectively.

Frome Technical have not lost at home all year, drawing two of their five games in the first round and scoring 20 of their 30 first-round goals there.

Charlemont High’s season hangs on a thread against a tough Browns Town team that came close to eliminating Rusea’s High last year, and this game could be the highlight of the day.

Charlemont High are the biggest surprise team this year, going unbeaten in Zone K, holding a powerful Dinthill Technical team to 2-2 draws twice, and scoring 36 goals in their first 10 matches.

Browns Town have also shown glimpses of brilliance but had to wait until the final day of the first round to book their spot, topping a competitive Zone I.

Lennon High could have a game on their hands against a plucky Little London High, as they drew 1-1 in the first game and a 0-0 draw would see them through on the away goal rule.

Paul Bogle High and Cedric Titus will both hope that home advantage will work in their favours, after drawing their first-leg games against St James High and Maggotty High.

Paul Bogle High led at Jarrett Park on Wednesday before giving up a late goal in a 1-1 draw.

Cedric Titus held Maggotty 0-0 at St Elizabeth Technical and will be at home at Elleston Wakeland Centre in Falmouth.

Meanwhile Garvey Maceo, who managed to get a 1-0 win away to Seaforth High on Wednesday, will be going after their 12th-straight win when they meet in the second game of the double-header at Juici Park.

Dinthill Technical, who had the biggest margin of win on Wednesday, will have a 6-0 cushion against Herbert Morrison Technical; Petersfield High have a two-goal lead over BB Coke after a 4-2 win on Wednesday; Manchester High lead Spalding 3-0; Cornwall College lead Titchfield High 3-1; while Port Antonio High, Old Harbour High and St Elizabeth Technical all have 2-0 leads over Oracabessa High, St Mary High and Vere Technical, respectively.
