First D’Cup quarter-finalists to be known today
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — The first two quarter-finalists in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition will be known today following the playing of two return-leg games in the second round at Juici Park.
Clarendon College lead Green Island High 5-0 after Wednesday’s first-leg game at the Colin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea and will play in the second game, set to start at 3:00 pm, after Glenmuir High and St Mary Technical, who are tied at 1-1 after their game in St Mary, meet to decide the first qualifier.
Clarendon College, who have won all nine games played so far and have made it to at least the semi-finals in the last two seasons, will start overwhelming favourites to advance at the expense of Green Island for the second-straight season, while Glenmuir High must hope ‘home field’ advantage will give them the edge over St Mary Technical.
Last year Clarendon College had beaten Green Island 5-1 in the first leg at Jarrett Park, but only managed a 1-0 win at home, and this could give the Hanover school hopes of at least lessening the deficit.
Green Island qualified as a best third-placed team after finishing third in Zone B in the first round behind defending champions Rusea’s High and Frome Technical, and will have their hands full against a Clarendon College team that is firing on all cylinders.
After a slow start, Nique Daley has got into high gear and has scored eight goals in his last three games, including two in Wednesday’s first leg.
Glenmuir High will hope to return to the quarter-finals as they did last year, after easily getting past Oracabessa, but will face a St Mary Technical team also eager to get back to the top 16 as well.
