Spillage at Ewarton Works effluent holding pond
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Residents in and around the areas of Byndloss, Vanity Fair, Charlemont Foot Bridge, as well as the Rio Cobre near to the Ewarton Works bauxite plant in St Catherine are being advised to desist from using water from waterways in the area “for the time being”.
The advisory has been given following continuous rainfall in the area since Sunday causing an overflow of trade effluent via the spillway of the effluent holding pond at the bauxite plant.
The bauxite company, in a release this afternoon, explained that through its environmental management programme it has increased routine monitoring and maximised the return of effluent to the plant to curtail the overflow from the holding pond, which has now ceased.
The company said its monitoring data has also shown that there has been a gradual improvement in the affected areas.
