Mile Gully draw first blood against Rusea’s High
MILE GULLY, Manchester — Defending champions Rusea’s High will have to come from behind for the second-straight year if they are to advance to the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after they were beaten 2-1 by Mile Gully High in their first-leg second-round game played at the Mile Gully Community Centre yesterday.
Mile Gully, who only booked their place in the second round as one of the two best third-placed teams, created the upset of the round as they beat the champions, handing them their first loss of the season.
Last year, Rusea’s were beaten 1-0 by Brown’s Town at the Montego Bay Sports Complex before eking out a win on penalty kicks in the second leg at Drax Hall.
There were also surprise wins for lower-ranked teams as Brown’s Town beat Charlemont High and Old Harbour High beat St Mary High, both making full use of home field advantage.
There were, however, wins for favourites Clarendon College, Dinthill Technical, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), Cornwall College and Manchester High.
Demar Wright and Jamar Coley scored for Mile Gully in their win over Rusea’s High who finished the game with 10 players.
Brown’s Town won their first-leg game for the second year after snapping Charlemont High’s season long 10-game win streak, beating them 2-1 at Drax Hall.
Rashwan Vernon and Bryan Barrett scored for the winners.
Old Harbour High beat St Mary High 2-0, ranking a big lead.
Nique Daley scored twice to lead Clarendon College to a 5-0 win over Green Island High; Roje Lane scored a hat-trick for Dinthill Technical in their 6-0 hammering of Herbert Morrison Technical; Aiden Jokombo got a brace for Cornwall College in their 3-1 win over Titchfield, while Jahlami Green and Ronaldo Webster scored for STETHS in their 2-0n win over Vere Technical.
