One second round spot yet to be decided
MONTEGO BAY — The final slate of match-ups for the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition will not be known until the organisers meet as yesterday’s final day of first round matches ended with one qualifier yet to be decided.
Eleven of the 12 remaining spots were booked with former champions St James High, Glenmuir High and Vere Technical all joining the other 20 schools that had earlier secured their places.
The vexing situation involves Zone J, where the crucial game between zone winners St Mary High and contenders Brimmervale High at Brimmervale was called off prematurely because of crowd issues.
St James High, Maggotty High, Spalding High, Brown’s Town High, Oracabessa High, Titchfield High, Glenmuir High, Vere Technical, Seaforth High, Green Island High and Mile Gully High all secured places to the second round set to be played this Wednesday and Saturday.
At Jarrett Park, St James High beat Green Pond High 3-1 to finish second behind Cornwall College in Zone A on 20 points, as Cornwall College ended on 28 points, getting full points from Maldon High, who failed to show up.
Maggotty High beat Munro College 2-1 in Zone E to take second place behind St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), who beat Lacovia High 5-3.
Spalding High edged Alston on goal difference to take the second spot in Zone G behind Christiana, both teams finishing on 16 points after drawing 1-1.
Brown’s Town High won Zone I after beating Ocho Rios High 3-1 to end with 21 points, while Oracabessa took second place with 19 points after beating York Castle High 2-1 at York Castle.
Titchfield High, on 17 points, joined Port Antonio High from Zone L after a 2-2 draw against Fair Prospect, who finished third with 15 points.
Glenmuir High made certain of their place with a 13-0 waxing of Cross Keys High to take second place in Zone M behind zone winners Garvey Maceo High, who beat Winston Jones High 10-0 to complete a perfect first round with 10 wins.
Clarendon College also ended perfect after a 7-0 beating of Thompson Town in Zone H, winning all eight games.
Vere Technical return to the second round after a year’s absence, edging Porus High 1-0 to take second spot behind Old Harbour on goal difference as both schools ended on 14 points. Old Harbour drew 0-0 with Kemps Hill.
Seaforth also advanced after beating Zone O winners Paul Bogle High 1-0.
