Grange pledges $5m towards Luton Shelton’s ALS expenses
PARIS, France — Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange has committed$5 million towards the medical care of former Reggae Boyz striker Luton Shelton, who has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Grange, who is currently in France on ministerial duties, said she became aware of the former footballer’s condition through social media.
Shelton’s condition was made public in a Television Jamaica feature, which was promoted on social media and aired Thursday night.
“I’ve been made aware of Luton’s illness through the social media. No one has been directly in touch with me. Based on what I’ve seen, I am concerned and I am committing five million dollars towards his medical expenses,” the minister said.
“I will ask the officers in the ministry to reach out to his family so I can get further details,” Grange added.
Shelton, 32, made his debut as an 18-year-old for Harbour View Football Club in the Jamaican premier league and has also played for clubs in Sweden, England, Norway, Denmark and Turkey.
