Clarendon, Frome lead four into D’Cup second round
GREEN ISLAND, Hanover – Four schools, led by former champions Clarendon College and Frome Technical, booked their spots in the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup competition after three rescheduled games yesterday.
Clarendon College and Petersfield High topped their respective zones, while Frome Technical and Little London High also booked their spots, bringing to 19 the total number of schools that have advanced to the second round set to be played October 17 and 20.
One more team, Christiana High from Zone G, could join the qualifiers today when two more rescheduled games are set to be played.
Clarendon College wrapped up Zone H honours after Kellits High failed to show up for the continuation of their game that was called off on October 2 due to a flooded field.
Clarendon College led 5-1 at the time of the stoppage and the three points earned will take them to 21 points from seven-straight wins with a game to go.
Lennon High, who had completed their fixtures on 18 points, will also advance as second place.
Frome Technical edged 10-man Green Island High 1-0 in their rescheduled game at Green Island and joined Zone B winners Rusea’s High in the second round.
Alwyn Hayles’ second-half goal made the difference for Frome Technical, who improved to 20 points, while knocking Green Island out of contention for one of the two automatic spots from the zone.
Green Island were reduced to 10 men in the first half after Geovanni Watson was sent off.
Petersfield High beat Knockalva Technical 5-1 in their Zone D game at Petersfield and improved to an unbeatable 17 points at the top of the zone.
Little London High, who had completed their fixtures on 14 points, also advanced as the second place finishers.
If Zone G leaders Christiana High can hold on to their 1-0 lead in their continued first round game against Holmwood Technical that will restart from the 85th minute, they would be the first school from the zone to book a place in the second round.
Christiana High led 1-0 on September 19 when the game was disrupted, and after an investigation, organisers ruled that the remaining five minutes of the game would be played today.
The teams will meet twice in five days after Christiana High won their return-round game 2-1 on Saturday.
Two points separate the top four schools in Zone G with Christiana High leading with 16 points from eight games, followed by Spalding High on 15 points from nine, with Holmwood Technical and Knox College on 14 each, both from eight games.
Also today, Knox College will play their rescheduled first-round game against fifth-placed Alston High, who are on 12 points and must avenge Saturday’s 1-0 loss if they are to stay in contention for a second round spot.
