ONLINE READERS’ COMMENT: Turks and Caicos needs real self-government
Dear Editor,
In the heyday of colonialism, Britain proudly declared that the sun would never set on its sprawling empire. Well, we all know how that turned out. So the great British people are still hanging onto every bit of rock that they can, no matter how small.
They should be ashamed of what they are doing to the tiny Turks and Caicos Islands which they still call their overseas territory. Can you imagine, they get to select the governor, deputy governor and attorney general to the Cabinet and give each of them veto power over the elected ministers of government?
No prime minister should have to be complaining that he or she cannot get to implement any programme on behalf of their people, unless they get the support of these three British-appointed persons. Ridiculous.
But the TCI people should shoulder some of the blame. They should have fought for their independence like so many other Caribbean islands. Still, it’s not too late as more and more of them are talking about the need for real self-government.
