Herbert Morrison book ticket to daCosta Cup second round
HOLLAND, Trelawny — Former champions Herbert Morrison Technical booked a place in the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition yesterday after holding off Holland High 1-1 in their Zone C first-round return leg game played at Holland High.
The former two-time champions improve to 16 points to ensure that they secured second place and snapped a three-year drought.
Tajae Bronstroph gave Herbert Morrison Technical the lead in the first half before Johnay McIntosh pulled the home team level in the second half.
Cedric Titus won the zone after a 5-0 hammering of William Knibb Memorial, moving to an unbeatable 24 points, as Kyle Marshall scored a hat-trick.
Three more schools can secure spots with three rescheduled games set for today, including both automatic spots from the competitive Zone D.
The last 25 minutes of the Zone H game between Clarendon College and Kellits High will be played after it was blown off in the 65th minute on October 2.
Clarendon College led the game 5-1 at the time of the stoppage and if they go on to win, as they are expected to, will top Zone H.
The former champions are tied on 18 points with Lennon High who have also qualified for the second-round, having completed their first round schedule, but Clarendon College will have one more game to go.
A win for Petersfield High over Knockalva Technical would see the Westmoreland school winning Zone D and would also mean that Little London High, who finished their schedule on 14 points, would also advance automatically.
Petersfield High are also on 14 points but with two games in hand, while Knockalva Technical are on nine and with a game in hand, and if they manage to win today, would throw the zone wide open.
Former champions Frome Technical could join defending champions Rusea’s High in the second round with a win over contenders Green Island in their second meeting in a week.
Frome Technical are on 17 points, four more than Green Island who have played a game less but must win today if they are to stage a run at the second place spot.
Also yesterday, Glenmuir High, Seaforth High and Titchfield all moved to within touching distance of qualifying for the second round with contrasting results.
Glenmuir High hammered Winston Jones High 8-0 in Zone M to open a three-point gap over third-placed Denbigh High and need only a point from their remaining game to join zone winners Garvey Maceo High as the automatic qualifiers.
Seaforth High, who would have advanced with a win, were held 0-0 by Morant Bay in Zone O to move to 17 points and need only to avoid a heavy loss in their final game to join zone winners Paul Bogle High in the next round.
Titchfield High beat Horace Clarke High 3-0 in Zone L and will advance as the runners-up with a win on Saturday.
Titchfield are on 16 points, seven behind leaders and zone winners Port Antonio High and two more than Fair Prospect and Annotto Bay High.
Anchovy High kept their slim hopes of a first-ever second round qualification alive with a 4-1 win over Green Pond High in their Zone A game.
Shaquile West scored twice for Anchovy High as they moved to 12 points with two games to go, still in fourth place behind zone winners Cornwall College (25 points), St James High (17 points) with a game to go and Green Pond on 13 points with a game to go.
Derron Williams and Renardo Brown both scored four goals and Howard Barker got a double as Charlemont High hammered Tacius Golding High 14-0 in their Zone K game.
The margin helped Charlemont High close the goal difference gap to leaders Dinthill Technical who beat Enid Bennett High (Bog Walk) 2-0 as both remained tied at the top of the points table on 23 points.
The race for places in Zone I continues to be tight as Brown’s Town surged into the lead with 18 points after a 3-0 win over Iona High.
York Castle beat Ocho Rios High 2-1 and both are tied on 16 points with Oracabessa High.
