Bailey, Duhaney power Waterhouse to crushing 9-2 win over Real MoBay
WATERHOUSE FC, led by hat-tricks from Shantel Bailey and Latoya Duhaney, carved out a crushing 9-2 win against Real MoBay AFC to capture the 2018 Jamaica Football Federation (JFF)/Lascelles and Partners Employers Co-Operative Cricket Union Women’s knockout football final at Waterhouse Mini Stadium last Saturday.
It was the second success for the Drewsland-based Waterhouse aggregation, as they had captured the mid-season final earlier.
Bailey scored four goals for Waterhouse in the 20th, 37th, 58th and 76th minutes, while Duhaney’s three goals were scored in the second, 12th and 46th minutes, while Rochell Gray converted in the fourth minute and Jessica Johnson added another in the 72nd minute.
Real MoBay’s consolation goals were scored in the second half through Elizabeth Vassell in the 69th minute, and Jodi-Ann McGregor in the 78th minute.
Everald Campbell, who is the assistant to Head Coach Xavier Gilbert, said he was very confident going into this final that the team would have won, though not so convincingly.
“The players were ready and well-prepared and they quickly made their presence felt early in the first half and got things going. They were also very awesome in their approach, especially in the first half where they scored quick goals to control the match,” Campbell said.
The coach added that he was surprised with Waterhouse’s wide margin of victory and the manner in which they dominated the entire match. “I didn’t expect the team to have won by such a wide margin as I was expecting a more competitive game from our opponents.”
He said winning the league competition should be more important than the knockout, but the players were still happy to have come out victorious.
Meanwhile, losing coach Marvin Peterkin from Real MoBay AFC said the girls started the game very flat, especially in the first half, and did not produce much pressure on their opponents, who took advantage from early in the first half where too many goals were scored.
“The players gave a much better showing in the second half as they reduced Waterhouse’s scoring opportunities with a stronger defensive approach, and we also managed to pull back two goals,” Peterkin said.
He said it was the first time the team faced Waterhouse this season and they did not expect they would have conceded so many goals in one half. “It’s a very young team without much experience, and it was a plus for us as it was also the first time they have played in a major final since participating in the competition for five years.”
Waterhouse took complete control of the slow approach of Real MoBay in the first half, with the opening goal coming through Duhaney followed by Gray in quick succession.
With Real MoBay on the ropes Waterhouse capitalised well, with Duhaney scoring her second goal before Bailey scored the first of four goals in the 20th minute.
Bailey got her second goal just after the half-hour mark, while Duhaney got her hat-trick in time added on at the interval for a commanding 6-0 lead.
Bailey made it 7-0 for her hat-trick on the hour mark, before Vassell pulled back a goal for the visitors from a right-foot shot just outside the penalty area, which deflected off the hands of the goalkeeper.
The goalscoring feast continued as Johnson who came on as a substitute, netted in the 72nd minute with a powerful and well-placed left-footed grounder that flashed quickly past goalkeeper Biyana Coleman.
Bailey’s fourth goal came from a ball that bounced over the head of a defender, and she quickly latched on before easily placing the ball out of the reach custodian Coleman.
Real MoBay got their second goal when McGregor collected a pass inside the box and lobbed goalkeeper Tiana Schoeter.
