Four more move into D’Cup second round
JUNCTION, St Elizabeth — BB Coke High and Old Harbour High returned to the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after long breaks as four more teams made progress after yesterday’s round of games in the return-leg of the first round.
BB Coke High, St Mary High and Paul Bogle High all scored wins to confirm their places, while Old Harbour High advanced without the kick of a ball as other results went in their favour.
St Mary High and Paul Bogle also won their respective zones in addition to booking second-round spots.
Clarendon College and Garvey Maceo are the only unbeaten teams left in the competition and scored wins yesterday.
Clarendon edged Edwin Allen High 1-0 to take their streak to six straight wins in Zone H, while Garvey Maceo High made it nine straight with a 3-0 win over Bellefield High in Zone M.
Meanwhile, Rusea’s High and Cornwall College, the last two winners of the competition, had their winning streaks snapped at eight after they were both held to 1-1 scorelines by Frome Technical and St James High, respectively.
Yesterday’s quartet joined 11 other schools that had booked their spots earlier, as 15 of the 32 second-round spots are now accounted for.
BB Coke High advanced past the first round for the first time since 2013, joining Manchester High from Zone F after they beat DeCarteret College 6-0, with Jason Dyer scoring twice to take his tally of the season to nine goals.
BB Coke are on 21 points, two behind leaders Manchester High, who were held 0-0 by May Day High.
Despite not being in action, Zone N leaders Old Harbour High made progress for the first time in four years after the scores went in their favour.
Central High were held 0-0 by Porus High and ended their schedule on 12 points, one less than Old Harbour and only Vere Technical, who edged Kemps Hill 1-0 to go to 11 points, can surpass Old Harbour on points.
St Mary High won Zone J and advanced for the first time in six years after beating Tacky High 2-0 to improve to an unbeatable 22 points.
St Mary Technical, zone winners in the last two years, lost for the second time in three days, beaten 2-0 by Brimmervale High to set up a race for the last spot.
St Mary Technical are on 17 points with one game to play, while Brimmervale High are now on 14 with two games to go.
Paul Bogle High confirmed their spot at the top of Zone O after outscoring Morant Bay High 4-3 and moved to 23 points.
Defending champions Rusea’s High lost their perfect win record when they were held to a 1-1 draw at Frome Technical, but they did enough to secure Zone B honours with 25 points.
