5 schools book second-round berths
ANCHOVY, St James — Former champions Cornwall College and Garvey Maceo High were among five schools who booked second-round spots in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition with wins in yesterday’s first round return leg games played on a rain-affected day.
In addition to advancing Cornwall College, Pt Antonio High and Garvey Maceo and St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), who had advanced in the previous set of games, all won their respective zones, while Cedric Titus and Manchester High also booked spots in the next round.
At least six games were not played due to heavy rains or waterlogged fields and are expected to be played next week.
Weather permitting, five more games are set to be played today where, barring a major catastrophe, defending champions Rusea’s High are expected to join the list of qualifiers after their game against Merlene Ottey High in Zone B.
Rusea’s High lead the zone with 21 points, six clear of second-placed Frome Technical who will host third-placed Green Pond (nine points) for the first time this season.
A win for Rusea’s High is almost a formality as Merlene Ottey High are one of two schools yet to score a goal in the competition — along with Tacius Golding — and have lost 18 of their last 19 games dating back to the 2014 season.
Garvey Maceo and Cornwall College extended their winning runs to eight straight against Cross Keys and Anchovy High, respectively.
Gregory Cousins scored four times to lead Garvey Maceo to an 11-0 trouncing of Cross Keys as Barrington Blake and Ronaldo Wright scored two each as they eased to 24 points at the top of Zone M.
Cornwall College beat Anchovy High 4-2 to secure Zone A honours, while St James High stayed in second place with a 4-0 win over Maldon High as Tiyane McIntosh and Ewan Barton both scored two each in the second half.
Cedric Titus High beat Spot Valley High 3-1 to move to 21 points in Zone C, ensuring at least second place, while Herbert Morrison Technical are second as they rebounded from their loss to the leaders on Saturday to hammer William Knibb Memorial 6-1 in Montego Bay.
Herbert Morrison’s goalkeeper David Gordon scored for the second-straight game, this time his long kick from his own goal line was badly misplayed by his counterpart Ronaldo Russel as the ball flew over his head and under the cross bar.
Andrew Layne’s eighth goal of the season, scored in the 70th minute, took Port Antonio High to a 1-0 win over Happy Grove to move to an unassailable 22 points in Zone L.
Titchfield High took over second place with a 2-1 win over Annotto Bay, while Fair Prospect and Horace Clarke draw 1-1.
Manchester High’s 1-0 win over Belair High was enough as they improved to 22 points and locked up a spot from Zone F.
STETHS took Zone E honours after their 5-2 win over Sydney Pagon High to move to 22 points, well clear of second-placed Maggotty High, who were held 1-1 by Lacovia High, while Newell High edged Munro College 1-0.
