Wolmer’s inch closer to second round of Manning Cup
Wolmer’s Boys’ School took a step closer to the second round with a convincing 5-2 win over Edith Dalton James High in their ISSA/Digicel Group G Manning Cup game at Heroes’ Circle yesterday.
Goals by Milton Harris (23rd, 45th), Deshaun Bernard (48th), Shemar Broomfield (57th), and Kimani Gibbons (71st) propelled Wolmer’s to their seventh win from eight games as they maintained their four-point lead atop of the group with 22 points.
It was a cruel blow to Edith’s chances of making the second round play-offs as they remained in third spot on 13 points, five points adrift of second-placed Holy Trinity, who mauled Pembroke Hall 7-0 to be on 18 points.
Edith Dalton James will now try to make it through as one of the two best third-placed teams and coach Omar Taffe remains optimistic.
“We have an outside chance as one of the best third-placed teams, we cannot say top two right now, but based on the game between Holy Trinity and Pembroke Hall we might can make the top two,” said Taffe, not knowing that Holy Trinity had won.
“But in today’s game I thought we showed Wolmer’s a little respect, and we surrendered the middle and shifted from the game plan,” he noted.
For Wolmer’s coach Alex Thomas, it was another stroll in the park as they fine-tuned their preparation for the second round with two sets of games remaining.
“The focus is on the next round as we getting there and the players are ready for the next round. We see who we might be going to play and we are planning, but taking it one step at a time,” said Thomas.
Meanwhile, the Group C encounter between Camperdown High and Meadowbrook High was rescheduled for today and that allowed Charlie Smith to move within two points of Camperdown who sit on 19 points.
Charlie Smith defeated Jonathan Grant 5-1 to moved to 17 points, but have played a game more than Camperdown, who could restore their five-point advantage when they play Meadowbrook today.
In the other Group C encounter, Norman Manley’s slim hopes of overhauling Charlie Smith took a dent as they crashed 0-2 to Eltham High. Norman Manley remained in third spot on 11 points ,while Eltham moved to 10 points.
