Clarendon, Lennon hunt second round berths
KELLITS, Clarendon — Former winners Clarendon College and Lennon High could secure both automatic qualifying places to the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition today with wins over last-placed Kellits High and Thompson Town, respectively, in their Zone H return-leg, first-round games.
If both schools win today they will join three other schools who secured places on Saturday — St Elizabeth Technical High School, Dinthill Technical and Charlemont High.
Clarendon College, last year’s losing finalists, lead Zone H with 15 points and had beaten Kellits High 5-0 in their first-round game, while second-placed Lennon High (12 points) were 3-0 winners over Thompson Town High who are currently in third place on 10 points.
Yesterday, Petersfield High scored a big 9-0 win over Belmont Academy to move up to the top of Zone D; St Mary Technical regained the lead in Zone J after blanking Tacky High 2-0, while Vere Technical edged Zone N leaders Central High 1-0, three days after giving up two late goals and lost 1-2 to the same opponent.
Three players scored two goals each — Shewayne Barton, Ruel Miller and Dujon Bartley — as Petersfield High ran roughshod over the newcomers they had beaten 8-0 in the first round.
The win took Petersfield High to 11 points from five games, and into first place on goal difference over Little London, who are one point ahead of third-placed Manning’s School.
St Mary Technical beat Tacky High 2-0 to reclaim the lead in Zone J by one point over St Mary High, 17-16.
In Zone N, Vere Technical kept their hopes of advancing past the first round alive with a 1-0 win over leaders Central High who were losing for the first time this season as the winners edged closer to the top two on eight points from six games.
On Saturday, Vere Technical led 1-0 for a long time before giving up two late goals to Central High, who lead with 11 points from six games with Old Harbour High in second place on eight points.
In Zone A, Green Pond High missed a chance of closing the gap on second-placed St James High after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Maldon High.
A win for Green Pond would have seen them close the gap on St James High to one point, but they inch up to 10 points, three behind the former champions with Cornwall College clear in the lead on 21 points.
Green Pond took the lead in the 85th minute through Chevaughn Duncan, but David Parkins struck six minutes into time added on to salvage a point for Maldon High.
