Three progress to D’Cup second round
BROWNS HALL, St Catherine — Three schools, including two former champions, are the first qualifiers for the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup following wins in yesterday’s second-leg games of the first round.
Last year’s beaten semi-finalists Dinthill Technical and St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) as well as Charlemont High, who were advancing from the first round for the first time since the 2010 season, all booked their spots with three rounds of matches still to be played.
Meanwhile, there were big wins for defending champions Rusea’s High and former winners Frome Technical, Cornwall College and Clarendon College as they moved to within touching distances of also qualifying for the second round.
Dinthill Technical, who were the biggest winners on the day, spanking Tacius Golding High 15-0 in Brown’s Hall, and Charlemont High who beat Ewarton High 3-0, both improved to 19 points to secure both spots from Zone K.
Tevin Cheese scored four times for Dinthill Technical to take his tally of the season to 10 goals. Three other players — Rasheede Parkinson, Oneil Small and Ackeem Mullings — got two each.
Charlemont High, easily one of the biggest surprises of the season after they failed to score in double-digit points for the last seven seasons, are still unbeaten after seven games and will advance to the second phase for the first time in seven years.
STETHS secured their place from Zone E with a 3-1 win over Maggotty High with two goals from Tahjae Green and one from Shamaar Wallace. They raced to 19 points.
Rusea’s High, Cornwall College, Clarendon College and Garvey Maceo all maintained perfect win records with impressive victories.
Javoy Diaz scored a hat-trick to lead Rusea’s High to a 8-0 spanking of Cambridge High in Zone B, while Raheem Graham scored two as Rusea’s High won their seventh-straight game to stay ahead of Frome Technical who also had an 8-0 win over Hopewell High at Frome.
Cornwall College ran past Irwin High 7-0 for their seventh-straight victory in Zone A, with Aiden Jokomba leading the way with a hat-trick as they are now within a point of qualifying for the second round.
Nique Daley also scored four goals to lead Clarendon College to a 6-0 win over second-placed Lennon High in Zone H. Thompson Town, meantime, beat Edwin Allen 3-1.
Clarendon College extended their perfect win record to five games and are on 15 points in Zone H.
Tyreke Henry scored the lone goal of the game as Garvey Maceo High edged Glenmuir High 1-0, beating them for the second time this season and opened up an eight-point lead at the top of Zone M.
In Zone C, Cedric Titus extended their lead to six points after beating Herbert Morrison Technical 4-2 in Montego Bay, snapping their four games winning run.
Kyle Marshall scored twice for Cedric Titus as they improved to 18 points as Herbert Morrison remained 12 and in second place.
Zone D leaders Little London lost for the first time this season, going down 3-0 to Mannings School who jumped into second place with 10 points, just one behind the leaders.
