Knox shock Holmwood
SPALDING, Manchester — Knox College surprised favourites Holmwood Technical 1-0 on Saturday to move into a tie with Spalding High for the lead in Zone G of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition.
Knox College’s win, only their second over Holmwood Technical in the last 15 meetings between the schools, took them to 10 points, same as Spalding High but with a slightly inferior goal-difference.
Holmwood Technical, winners of the zone the last two years and who have advanced past the first round four times in the last five seasons, are in third place on seven points, tied with Christiana High.
Prior to this, the last time Knox beat Holmwood in the daCosta Cup was in the 2015 season when neither team advanced.
Knox are hoping to snap their seven-year drought of not getting past the first round by upsetting the form charts this year.
Meanwhile, favourites have so far obliged in the other three zones in central Jamaica, St Elizabeth Technical lead in Zone E after their 2-0 win over arch-rivals Munro College on Saturday, followed by Maggotty High with Newell High and Munro tied for third.
Manchester High lead Zone F by a point over BB Coke with Mile Gully High in third while Clarendon College are a perfect four-for-four win in Zone H, three points better than Lennon High who they beat 5-1 on Saturday, ending their winning run at three games.
