Champs Rusea’s blank nine-man Frome to consolidate lead
LUCEA, Hanover — Defending champions Rusea’s High blanked nine-man Frome Technical 3-0 with three second-half goals in their Zone B of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup at the Collin Miller Sports Complex here yesterday.
The victory extends Rusea’s lead, increasing it to six points over the former champions.
Both teams went into the game on a high in what was the feature game of the day, but it was the defending champions with two goals from Kenroy Campbell who prevailed to win their fifth-straight, joining Garvey Maceo High for a handful of wins to start their season.
Two Frome Technical players were shown the red card in the second half in separate incidents.
Former champions Cornwall College and Clarendon College also maintained their perfect win records with victories over St James High and Lennon High, respectively, while St Elizabeth Technical blanked Munro College in their Zone E derby.
In Lucea, Campbell took his tally to six goals as the Rusea’s team shut down the high-flying Frome Technical who had scored 15 goals in their three games.Jhavoy Diaz added a third in stoppage time.
Cornwall College took their winning streak to four games with a 3-0 win over St James High in their Zone A game at Jarrett Park and are yet to concede a goal this season.
Shavon McDonald gave Cornwall College the lead inside the first minute of the game and they held the lead until early in the second half when a St James High defender turned a ball past his own goalkeeper to double the lead.
Salano Birch added a third for Cornwall College with a spectacular bicycle kick late in the game as the winners rushed to 12 points to lead by three points. St James High, meantime, have not won in their last three games after winning their first two.
Anchovy High beat Green Pond for the first time, edging them 3-2 at Anchovy and joined them in second place, both on nine points each.
Rainor Barnes, Resean Gray and Antonio Kerr were the scorers for Anchovy High.
Clarendon College scored three second-half goals to beat Lennon High 5-1 in their Zone H top-of-the-zone clash at Clarendon College, also for their fourth-straight win and ending Lennon High’s run of three-straight.
The home team led 2-1 at half-time before running out easy winners in the second half and took over the sole leadership in the zone.
Herbert Morrison Technical made it three-straight wins with a 2-1 win away to Muschett High after losing their first two games and moved into second place in Zone C behind leaders Cedric Titus who edged Holland High 1-0 at Holland.
Cedric Titus lead with 12 points, three more than Herbert Morrison Technical.
Manchester High beat May Day High 3-0 to stay on top of Zone F with 13 points as BB Coke High stayed in second place on 12 points after edging DeCarteret College 2-1.
Knox High upset Holmwood Technical 1-0 to stay in the lead in Zone G with Spalding High who were 2-0 winners over Alston High.
Both are on 10 points, three more than Holmwood Technical who stayed on seven points.
St Mary High retook the lead in Zone J after beating Brimmervale High 4-1, thanks to a double from Rajeem Beckford and improved to 12 points, two more than St Mary Technical.
Port Antonio High stayed in the lead in Zone L after edging Annotto Bay 1-0, while Fair Prospect moved into second place after coming from behind to beat Titchfield High 2-1 with goals from Adrian Bailey in the 74th and 93rd minutes.
Happy Grove edged winless Horace Clarke 1-0.
Paul Bogle High joined Morant Bay on 10 points at the top of Zone O after beating them 2-0, while two goals from Kenroy Leslie led St Thomas Technical to a 4-0 win over Robert Lightbourne High.
