D’Cup zone leaders face stern test today
SAVLAMAR, Westmoreland —The lead in three zones could change today as the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition continue with four rescheduled games in four zones.
Muschett High in Zone C, Mannings School in Zone D and the winner of the St Mary Technical vs Brimmervale game in Zone J could take over the leads in their respective groups should they win today.
Meanwhile, Green Island High will be going after a second-straight win in Zone B when they take on Cambridge High in a Zone B game at Cambridge.
Muschett High are the only team in Zone C not to lose a game so far and are on four points from their two games, trailing joint leaders Spot Valley High and Cedric Titus on six points. They face a Holland High team that have lost both games played and are yet to score a goal, one of 12 schools with that dubious distinction.
Muschett High followed up their opening game draw against William Knibb with a 1-0 upset win over Cedric Titus on Thursday and will be seeking to break a three-game winless run against Holland High today.
Mannings School, who have failed to advance past the first round in the last two seasons, will hope to rebound from their loss to Little London last week when they take on Knockalva Technical who drew their only game so far 0-0.
Mannings are on three points and in third place, two behind leaders Little London and one behind Petersfield High.
The lead in Zone J will be on the line as the winner of the St Mary Technical vs Brimmervale High game at the Highgate Community Centre will pass St Mary High at the top of the points table.
Both teams are on four points from two games, a win and draw and tied for third place behind leaders St Mary High, who are on six points from three games and Guys Hill with five points, also from three games.
A win for either team today would see them take over the leadership in what is expected to be a close battle for the two qualifiers for the second round.
St Mary Technical have won the zone the last two seasons, but have scored one goal in their two games this season.
Green Island are going for their second straight win after rebounding from their opening day loss to defending champions Rusea’s High with a 4-0 win over Merlene Ottey High.
Cambridge High have lost both games played so far, scoring a goal in each game but have not been able to stop their opponents from scoring.
Green Island are playing for second place now as Rusea’s High and Frome Technical are tied in the lead, both on nine points from three straight wins.
