Six hunt third-straight wins in D’Cup
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Six top-of-the-zone clashes between schools that have won their first two games, will highlight today’s massive round of 38 games as the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition continues in what could be an explosive round of matches.
A week after the start of the competition and just three rounds into the new season, a number of schools, including four former champions, will be seeking to establish themselves in the first round.
Two former champions, Glenmuir High and Garvey Maceo, will meet at Juicy Field in Zone M; St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and Maggotty High will meet at Appleton Field in Zone E; Mile Gully High hosts Manchester High at the Mile Gully Community Centre in Zone F; Brown’s Town and Ocho Rios will meet at Addison Park in Zone I; surprise team Charlemont High faces Dinthill Technical at the Bramwell Clarke Sports Complex in Zone K, while Port Antonio High hosts Titchfield High in Zone L.
Eight other schools — led by defending champions Rusea’s High — will also be going after their third-straight win. Also on the chase for three-straight are Cornwall College, St James High, Frome Technical, Spot Valley High, Ewarton High, Lennon High and Morant Bay High.
Three schools — Petersfield High, Clarendon College and Kemps Hill — will also be seeking to extend their winning starts.
Glenmuir High and Garvey Maceo will meet in the first round for the first time in a number of years and are separated by just two goals, with Glenmuir leading.
Neither team have allowed a goal in as yet.
Despite being tied on six points, STETHS will start favourites to beat Maggotty High, who they beat twice last year. STETHS have started with a bang, scoring 13 goals in both games so far.
In comparison, Maggotty High have managed just two goals, one in each game against Lacovia and newcomers Sydney Pagon, with the latter being hammered 10-0 by STETHS.
Mile Gully have played second fiddle to Manchester High in Zone F over the years but, based on form, the games this year could be more competitive.
Manchester High have ruled the roost the last three seasons and have not lost to Mile Gully over the span.
On paper, there is little between Zone I leaders Brown’s Town High and Ocho Rios High, both scoring three goals in their two games. Ocho Rios have allowed in one goal.
Ocho Rios will be hoping to avoid last season’s record, when they won their first four games and were within a few points of winning the zone before losing their following four games, failing to advance.
Charlemont High’s six goals scored in their first two games tied their total from last year when they won just one of 10 games played, but they are tied on points with Dinthill Technical, winners of their last 21 games in Zone K, and Ewarton High.
They will have their biggest test today to prove their mettle against the giants of the zone and a loss could see them lose ground, with Ewarton playing winless Enid Bennett High (Bog Walk).
Port Antonio High are off to a fast start and their 10 goals in their first two matches equal their total from the 2017 season when they won Zone L. Titchfield, meantime, are yet to concede a goal.
Rusea’s High will be another test for Hopewell High who were beaten 5-2 by Zone B leaders Frome Technical on Thursday after winning their opening game, as the champions seek to keep pace with the leaders.
Frome Technical are expected to get the better of Merlene Ottey High, who are yet to score a goal in two games while giving up five.
Zone A leaders Cornwall College have started slowly, doing just enough to win their two games so far, and will face a confident Anchovy High team who are coming off their first win of the season against Maldon High.
They are yet to concede a goal, however, and this could make the difference against Anchovy High. St James High will seek to hand Maldon High a third-straight loss.
On form, Spot Valley look to be the class of Zone C and will host Cedric Titus, still smarting from their loss at Muschett on Thursday.
William Knibb and Muschett High, who will play winless Herbert Morrison and Holland High, respectively will be contenders for second place.
