Wilcott, Clarke among winners at GasPro Junior Tennis Champs
KOBI Wilcott, Keyondre Clarke, and Danhill Moe captured singles titles at the seventh staging of the two-day GasPro Open Junior Tennis Championship at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston last weekend.
Wilcott, who attends St Andrew School For Girls, was the top seed in the Girls Open in which she defeated Chrisania Hunter in straight sets 4-1, 4-0 in the final.
In her first match Wilcott defeated Onika Shaw 4-1, 4-0, while Hunter came from a set down to also beat Shaw 1-4, 4-0 (10-4) after a super tiebreaker.
The 17-year-old Wilcott said it was a good win for her and that she focused well on her match.
“My opponents are really good and it was not the first time I was playing in a round-robin format tournament. The win was really good for me and it was also a good experience,” Wilcott said.
Keyondre Clarke, the top seed in the Boys 16-and-under singles, made easy work of his opponent, Joshua Graveney, with a comfortable 4-1, 4-1 win to claim the title.
“I am very happy for the win and will be looking forward to play in next month’s junior tournament, and also the bigger major tournament in October,” said the 14-year-old Clarke, who attends Campion College.
Clarke and Graveney had both won all their round-robin format singles matches en route to the final.
Danill Moe defeated Phillip Lambert 4-0, 4-1 in the deciding match to capture the Boys 12-and-under singles title. Both Moe and Lambert had won their four matches in the round-robin format.
Phillip Lambert and Lisa Thomas were both presented with the sportsmanship award for boys and girls, respectively, in the championships.
Tournament Director, Llockett McGregor thanked GasPro for sponsoring the tournament for an eighth-consecutive year and congratulated the players for contributing to an exciting event.
“I encourage the parents to bring the young ones out to learn and play tennis, as this is the only way the sport will be able to grow and developed in the future,” McGregor added.
