GOTHENBURG, Sweden — Cavalier Soccer Club thrashed FK Akademija Pandev from Macedonia 7-0 yesterday to put themselves back in contention for a chance to advance from the preliminary stages of the Gothia Cup being played here.

The Kingston-based club thus moved to three points from two games after going down 1-2 to Sweden’s IK Sirius FK the previous day. BK Hacken lead with the perfect six points from two games, while IK Sirius FK are also on three points, with FK Akademija Pandev rounding out the four-team Group Four at the bottom without a point.

Cavalier will face BK Hacken today at 8:00 am Jamaica time.

Yesterday Shaniel Thomas netted a hat-trick and he was ably supported by Nicque Daley — who was said to have missed a number of chances in the first game — Kaheem Parris and Dwayne Atkinson.

Omar Thompson had scored Cavalier’s consolation on Monday.

The Rudolph Speid-led Cavalier are one of 24 teams contesting the Gothia Trophy (B17) during the Gothia World Youth Cup tournament, dubbed the world’s largest and most international youth football tournament in which teams from nearly 80 nations take part.

For the Gothia Trophy, there are six groups of four teams with the top two teams from each group advancing to the A finals, and the rest of the teams to play the B finals.

The four best group winners qualify directly to the quarter-finals, with the other group winners and second place teams in each group go to “eight finals”.

Games are played over two 30 minutes halves on astroturf, while the final will be played on hybrid grass.

Cavalier’s invitation to the tournament came two years ago when they displayed their quality at two Under-15 tournaments in the Cayman Islands comprising national youth and overseas academies.

It is understood that two players past the age of 17 will be allowed to participate.
