Chin, Cain advance to second round of ITF Jamaica tourney
JAMAICANS John Chin and Damani Cain yesterday advanced to the second round of the 2018 International Tennis Federation (ITF) Jamaica International Tennis Tournament being played at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre.
Chin, seeded at number eight in the Under-18 singles, defeated Carlos Aguiar of Chile in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, while unseeded Cain easily eliminated Jordan Beaton of Guyana, also in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
In today’s second round, that begins at 9:00 am, Chin will take on unseeded Joshua Miller of the United States of America, while Cain go up against top seed Blaise Bicknell.
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Nicholas Gore lost in three sets to second seed Alfredo Casso of Mexico 6-2, 2-6, 6-4; and Blake Shoucair went down 6-2, 6-1 to Wil Jenkins of Great Britain.
Jamaica’s Kailey Chin lost to Kalyca Fraser of Guyana 7-5, 4-0 when she retired in the second set; Jenna Harrison lost 6-1, 6-1 to fourth seed Kristen Borland of Canada.
The Jamaicans were no match for the participating overseas players as they were easily knocked out in their first round matches on Monday.
In boys’ doubles played yesterday, Bicknell (USA) and Gore of Jamaica defeated Beaton and Heimraj Resaul of Guyana 6-1, 6-3; Chin of Jamaica and Russell Armstrong of US Virgin Island beat Cain and Romeo Edwards of Jamaica 6-3, 6-3.
The overseas players participating in the tournament are from the United States of America, Canada, Japan, China, Chile, Barbados, Guyana, Colombia, Bolivia, US Virgin Island, Mexico, Great Britain, Austria, Slovakia, South Africa, and the Cayman Islands.
