Cain, Stephens cop triples at Caribbean Junior Tennis Championships
Top seeds Damani Cain and Michaela Stephens of Jamaica each captured three individual titles at the Touch Tuina Blue Mountain Caribbean Junior Tennis Championships that ended at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston last Friday.
The two Jamaicans dominated in the 18 and under singles, 18 and under doubles, and 16 and under singles.
Cain confirmed that it was the first time he was winning three titles in any single tournament and that it felt very good.
“I retained my 16 and under singles title I won last year, while winning the boys’ 18 and under singles and doubles for the first time.
“I was very confident that I would have won the 18 and under boys singles title, as I did not seen any players who were likely to provide that great challenge,” Cain said.
The 16-year-old student from Wolmer’s Boys’ School said his opponent Romeo Edwards of Jamaica, who was seeded at two, never really put up any great challenge, as only in the first set he played some good shots.
He said he was looking to do well at this week’s International Tennis Federation (ITF) Jamaica Invitational Junior Tennis Tournament that began yesterday. “I lost in the second round last year, but should do much better this time.”
Meanwhile, Stephens said despite dominating the 18 and under girls’ singles final, her opponent Jenna Harrison of Jamaica played well in parts, but thought that the 16 and under final between them earlier seemed to have taken a toll on Harrison.
“I was very confident that I would have won the girls’ 18 and under singles title as I did not see any great challenge apart from Harrison. However, I did not expect to win so easily and was looking for a better performance from her,” Stephens said.
Stephens, a 15-year-old student of Liberty Academy, said she will be looking to perform well at the ITF Under-18 girls’ singles.
Damani Cain defeated Romeo Edwards in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to win the 18 and under singles title that lasted one hour and 11 minutes. He had earlier won the 16 and under singes title with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Heimraj Resaul of Guyana that lasted only one hour.
Cain paired with his Jamaican partner Edwards to capture the boys’ Open doubles title by coming from a set down to defeat the pair of Resaul and Jordan Beaton of Guyana 2-4, 4-2, 10-8 in the super tiebreaker.
Stephens won the girls’ 18 and under singles title by defeating Jenna Harrison in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 that lasted one hour and 14 minutes. Stephens first battled with Harrison in the girls’ 16 and under singles, winning 6-2, 5-7, 10-4 in the tiebreaker that lasted two hours and 10 minutes.
Stephens’ third title came in the girls’ Open doubles by partnering with Harrison for a 4-1, 5-2 short sets win over the Guyanese pair of Afruica Gentle and Sarah Klautky.
Third-seeded Keyondre Clarke of Jamaica won the boys’ 14 and under singles title by gaining a walkover from top seed John Azar Jr of Jamaica, while the girls’ 14 and under singles was won by Sarah Klautky of Guyana after winning her three matches in the round-robin format.
Jahmarie Swan of Jamaica won the boys’ 12 and under singles title in the round-robin format by winning three of his four matches.
Meanwhile, in the semi-finals of the boys’ 18 and under singles, Cain knocked out Jordon Beaton of Guyana 6-0, 6-1, while Edwards disposed of Joshua Kalekyezi of Guyana 6-0, 6-3.
In the girls’ 18 and under semi-finals, Stephens whipped Gentle of Guyana in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 to avenge her defeat at the recent Quest Series tournament, while Harrison crushed Kobi Wilcott of Jamaica in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
