Boxer Sanjay Williams leaves for training camp in Canada
Leading Jamaica amateur lightweight boxer Sanjay Williams from the Bruising Gym will leave the island today for Canada to continue preparation for the 23rd Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games at a training camp at Dewith’s Boxing Studio in Toronto.
On completion of his short stay with Dewith’s Boxing Studio, from there Williams will leave to link up with the Jamaican contingent at the CAC Games that will be held in Barranquilla, Colombia, from July 20 to August 3.
Williams’ coach Carl Grant made the disclosure at the Contender fight last Wednesday night, when his professional boxer Richard “Frog” Holmes defeated Canadian Dave Leblond to reach the final of the 2018 Wray & Nephew Contender series.
Grant said: “Williams was pleased in his preparation in a feverish manner for the challenge and is now attending the training camp to add a few more finishing touches to his preparation before competing at the games.
“We got an offer to go to Canada to attend this training camp, and nothing can beat a training camp. There we are going to get added exposure — we are going to get exposure from boxers from a new gym and this, no doubt, will be good for him going into the CAC Games. Even though he gets one fight, the experience will be great for him as he will learn a thing or two,” Grant pointed out.
Williams will enter the CAC Games with a ring record of 17 fights and two defeats, but according to his coach, “It does not matter whether or not he has 17 fights. It is what he is expected to go out there in the ring and do.”
