Bring on the new transport sector laws!
Dear Editor,
The Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS) is not surprised that, after 18 years, successive governments and technocrats in the public transportation sector are just coming up with real solutions to solve the problems in the area.
We remain hopeful and shall not be daunted.
Over the last three years we have increased the pressure on Government to do everything in its power to reduce habitual disorder among some public sector transport operators and more so, those who are using the sector to carry out their acts of criminality.
Despite some concern on aspects of the proposed new Road Traffic Act we have been urging Government to let us have the Act now; bring it on, we say. We want to work with anything that can transform the sector. We are ready!
The sector is now tired of the talk; we now need action. But we are not going to take what is not good for the sector, and that is why we are calling for two things as we consult on the minister’s 15-point proposal:
1. A technical rationalisation of the agencies that have responsibility for the public transport sector.
2. The establishment of a National Public Passenger Transportation Policy.
Nothing that is put in place will work without addressing these two issues.
We are ready for action and transformation.
