Hood Celebrityy signs with Epic Records
Jamaican dancehall rapper Hood Celebrityy has signed with Epic Records. She officially became a member of the major label’s team in May.
Born Tina Pinnock, Hood Celebrityy moved from Portmore to Bronx, New York, during her teens. She released two mixtapes in 2017, Can’t Believe It’s Just a Girl and Trap Vs Reggae. The latter peaked at number nine on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart.
Her 2017 single, Walking Trophy, went to number 27 on the magazine’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Chart last week. Hood Celebrityy’s song, Find My Way Out is on the soundtrack to the movie Superfly which was released on June 8 by Epic.
Superfly opened in United States theatres five days later, making US$8 million, the sixth-highest figure at the box office.
Epic Records is owned by Sony Music Entertainment and is one of that conglomerate’s three flagship labels. The others are Columbia records and RCA Records.
Artistes currently signed to Epic Records include Mariah Carey, Keyshia Cole, Future, Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, Busta Rhymes, DJ Khaled and Meghan Trainor.
Grammy-winning dancehall artiste Shabba Ranks and singer Jovi Rockwell are Jamaicans once signed to Epic Records.
Sony Music’s subsidiary labels have enjoyed great success with Jamaican acts over the years. They include 550 Music (Tanto Metro and Devonte and Patra), the WORK Group (Diana King), Columbia Records (Mad Cobra and Tony Rebel), and Chaos Recordings (Tiger).
