Catherine Hall All-stars look to improve in WBA Elite League
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Catherine Hall All-stars will be seeking to take over third place in the points table of the Western Basketball Association Elite Basketball League (EBL) with a second win over Cornwall Courts Chargers as the second round of games tip off today at the Montego Bay Cricket Club, starting at 6:15 pm.
Both teams are coming off losses on Saturday, but Cornwall Courts are at the foot of the table yet to win a game, while Catherine Hall, who had won the first-round game, are tied for third place with Holland Saints on 10 points, but have played one game more.
Granville Jaguars, who beat Catherine Hall All-Stars on Saturday, lead with a perfect 14 points from seven first- round wins, one point ahead of Cricket Club Knights, who were 59-55 winners over Cornwall Courts on Saturday.
In the other game played on Saturday, Holland Saints prevailed 66-57 over Sav-Elite Titans.
Granville Jaguars completed a perfect first round after coming from a first-half deficit against Catherine Hall, who led 13-10 and 36-25 after the first two quarters, respectively.
Granville pulled to within a point of Catherine Hall, 51-52, at the end of the third quarter before easing past them in the fourth quarter to win by six points.
David Gordon scored a double-double for Granville Jaguars, 19 points and 15 rebounds, Dave Black had 15 points, Cleon Morgan, 14 points, and Levar Rose, 12 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists, while Leroy Lawrence grabbed 15 rebounds and had three blocked shots.
Dwayne Johns had a double-double for Catherine Hall of 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Jermaine Rerrie just missed a double-double with 15 rebounds and nine points, Michael Schloss led all scorers with 34 points as Goyan Malcolm dished out 10 assists.
Cricket Club Knights also had to pull off a second-half rally to get the better of Chargers, outscoring them 44-29 in the third and fourth quarters.
Chargers led by a point, 12-11, after the first quarter and extended their advantage to 11 at half-time, 26-15, before Knights shook off their lethargy and took over the game in the second half.
Knights pulled to within a point at the end of the third quarter, 39-40, then carried their momentum over into the fourth quarter which they won 20-15 for the close victory.
Antonio Spence had a double-double for Knights, scoring 18 points and had 14 rebounds as well as seven assists as Omroy Kerr with 10 points was the only other player in double digits in points.
Jhaun Bryan was a point short of a double-double with 13 rebounds and nine points, while Rayon Gardiner scored eight points and had nine rebounds.
Detroy Jewery led the scoring for Chargers with 12 points, while Giovanni Bailey and Moy Coke both scored 11 points.
In the other game, Holland Saints got off to a good start and held off a hard-charging Sav-Elite Titans, who scored 45 of their 57 points in the second half of the game.
Led by Errol Steele, who scored 43 of his team’s 66 points and had 14 rebounds, Holland Saints were up 16-8 after the first quarter and upped that to 36-12 at half-time before the Westmoreland team started a comeback,
Sav-Elite cut the deficit to 21 points in the third quarter, 53-32, and further trimmed it to nine, but could get no closer.
Steele was the only Saints player who scored in double digits, while Martin Belnavis got 14 rebounds and Huntley Duhaney had 10.
Richard Chambers scored 20 points for Sav-Elite and Troy Reid scored 15 points.
