Unbeaten Jamaica face champs T&T in Women’s T20 tournament
Jamaica will put their unbeaten record on the line when they challenge title-holders Trinidad and Tobago in today’s fourth-round Cricket West Indies Regional Women’s Twenty20 match at Sabina Park.
The game, which is the feature clash of a triple-header at the venue, is set to begin 6:30 pm.
In the first game, Windward Islands take on Leeward Islands in a 9:30 am start, while the second encounter pits Guyana against undefeated Barbados at 2:30 pm.
Hosts Jamaica have an unblemished record so far after easily beating Guyana, Windward Islands and Leeward Islands over the first three rounds of the campaign.
Trinidad and Tobago, though starting the tournament with victory over the Leewards, suffered successive losses to Guyana and Barbados to all but relinquish their hold on the trophy.
But Jamaica Head Coach Cleon Smith expects a competitive contest.
“We’re not expecting that they will be throwing up heir arms, so we have to just go and play harder than we have been playing because we are going up against a tougher team,” he told journalists during an interview on Thursday.
“We just have to go and lift our game. Their pride is hurt because they’ve lost two consecutive games, and everybody always plays Jamaica real hard,” Smith added.
The Jamaica coach praised his players for their strong start to the tournament, while acknowledging that Trinidad and Barbados are likely to be stiffer opponents.
“I must say kudos to the players. We are sticking to the plan and everything is working. No team has made 100 against us as yet and that speaks to our tenacity as a bowling unit and as a fielding unit.
But the three [victorious] games are done and those two games to come will decide the championship, so we have to bring our “A” game,” Smith concluded.
